G80 aka GeForce 8800 Release Date

I think with the power this baby sucks up - is SLI desireable?

Knowing how bad official Intel SLI boards (based on Nvidia chipsets) are (still to be proven otherwise) would you want SLI given that they wont overclock as well as Intel boards whoch only support crossfire?

Also, the R600 is said to use about 20% more power than a G80 making for an even bigger problem of power versus perfromance.

Then we move to the point where we ask how much of the multi GPU performance will be CPU limited - heck we only just realised the true performance ceiling of the 7900GTX SLI and X1950XTX Crossfire.

IMHO multi GPU will be for the benchers and offer no real gain to the gamers unless of course they are using 32" Widescreeen TFT's :)

The Inq REports (proving the above):

OUR PALS with a nice toy named G80, Geforce 8800 GTX informed us that unless you overclock your CPU, you won't get the right performance delta. If you test 3Dmark06 with a 1000MHz overclocked Core 2 Quad or Duo you get 11300 marks. But when you test the same card, same test on a same non overclocked CPU at 2.66GHz the situation completely changes.

You score about 8000+ with a single card, almost identical to our score with 7950 GX2, the two GPU card. Shocking isn't it, as you'd expect more? To be fair to Nvidia's latest greatest card, the Geforce 7800 GTX scores some 5200+ in the same test so Geforce 8800 GTX is significantly faster than this single GPU card but not from the dual chip one. We are sure that this is just case for 3Dmark and that games will benefit more.

Don't say that we haven't warned you - you will need a faster CPU to push this card to its limits. A chap called Victor metioned in the overclocking story actually bought G80 card, he is not under NDA, which makes it even worst for Nvidia. µ

G80 prices:

£407 and £315 resp. Preorder.

The usual expensive preorder guys are supposedly not doing preorder... does that mean lots of supply?

They are quoted (on forums) by bit-tech as:

8800GTS: £380

8800GTX: £530

i have read victors post and it would seem kentsfield is the way to go in 06

The GTS has a single PCI-E plug. Those werent done by me, and the CPU speed was pretty low (3.1 or so)

Certainly a step forward in performance terms, but with the length, cost and power draw of the card being what they are i dont think it is a stunning proposition.

G

If that is right, and i remember what the X1950XTX draws relative to the X1900XTX then that is about the same level as the X1900XTX, so why does it need 2 PCI-E connectors?

Might be interesting to see how the power draw changes as the overclock and voltage increase. Might it pull a prescott and have the power scale insanely with the MHz and Vs?

G

power stability? The 24-pin ATX plug offers nothing new over a 20-pin in terms of voltages etc....

Which, if true, makes me wonder if you can run one with a single power connector unless really pushing it (in the same way that a 24pin PSU makes no difference over a good 20pin PSU unless you are really going for suicide benchies with a bucket of power draw).

G

Edit - just thinking to myself reflecting on my post that it is a bit crazy me being this interested about a card which hasnt been released yet when i can in no way shape and form afford one, let alone the rig upgrade to do it justice. Damn natural curiosity, hope i dont go the way of that fabled cat :p

You guys might recall that I purchased a power meter that measures the watts pulled from the socket in the wall.

So I can tell you that my whole watercooled rig:

X6800 @ 3.8ghz

7950GX2 @ 1.6v and 730/820

Exos 2 GPU watercooled loop for GPU

TT Bigwater 745 for CPU

3x Hitachi 7K250 drives

Pulls 317w idle, 380w inlcuding Dell 24" Monitor

Loaded (3dm01 Nature) Pulls 470w with monitor switched off - I guess that 3dm06 pulls an extra 50w (due to extra use of DX9 shaders)

So it looks as though the G80 will actually (as a single slot single GPU solution) pull less power than an SLI set-up and provide more 3D Power - Ticks all the boxes especialy for those looking to upgrade a single card solution - it might be harder to justify for those that are limited by their CPU overclock (AMD owners forget it, only C2D users need apply right now).

I'd be interested to see how it scales at higher resolutions ie that of the 30inchers - 2560x1600.

You know - it's a bit of a faux pas that this has happened.

However - its great news the the green machine took the initiatve and recalled the units before tehy hit the shelf - some of you will recall the less than reliable 7900GT fiasco earlier this year.

A sensible move by a giant that is big enough to react to an issue before it becomes a problem.

Plus it might give me enough time to create some more 7950GX2 havoc before the G80 steals the thunder :)
