G-Sync without the G-Sync module?

This REALLY isn't Nvidia's week...

First GTX 970 Spec Epic Fail, and now G-Sync as well ?!

Head's will roll and job's will be lost at NV, in months ahead.

If this is true and G-sync can work on freesync ready panels using a modded driver, NVIDIA should apologise...
And still there will be fanboys that will say that AMD stole from NVIDIA that's why it will work, while this not entirely true of false, isn't the Adaptive Sync an open standard by VESA?...

Yes it is

I haven't tried it as my Dell U3011 is only DP1.1a compatible. I'd imagine Tom has a few DP1.2 compatible monitors ;).

If it's true that G-Sync is nothing more than a hardware security dongle, for which they are charging money for, there will be a lot of fucked off people right now.

Nvidia have shot themselves in both feet now and don't have a leg left to stand on, leaving them defenceless. Dig yourselves out of this one Nvidia.

Best reaction we can get from NVIDIA would be suing the guy who modded the driver for "reverse-engineering". A.K.A. how to be sent to the corner to make Ubi some company :p

I think the important factor here is that its a laptop. If you guys remember 2 years ago when the earliest freesync was shown off it was on a laptop. They did this for reasons which now elude me.

Probably not far from the truth, reverse engineering is no doubt in the EULA. When was the last time you agreed to one of those without reading it? Perhaps Nvidia can out-smart Apple on this :D .

Why would i read them when a lot of the terms in there do not apply to the law in my country, or to me for that matter xD

I get that a lot of people want to switch to G-sync and free-sync monitors now they're there... but am I the only one that feels I'm not even missing out on anything with a regular monitor? Like, no one even noticed the 'problem' until Nvidia pointed it out when they introduced G-sync, and now everyone feels like they need it.

Also, I'm sorry (not hating or anything) but I just laughed at AMD's demo picture of Freesync as they display two completely different monitors

One has much bigger bezels than the other. One is matte where the other is a glossy screen, with obviously much better contrast and colours... Like, do they really need this trickery to sell their product? Of course everyone's gonna go "Well the freesync one looks better" when you set it up on a monitor that is in fact better, despite having nothing to do with the whole point of freesync?

Or maybe they didnt have time to make two of the same thing but one without freesync and this took a normal monitor that had similar specs and then grabbed the first proto for freesync. What you're stating as better colors/contrast/glossy has no impact on performance. Visually you can see the difference in smoothness. The eyecandy won't effect the actual video.

I've noticed it since I got into PC gaming :P.

Exactly my point.

If they 'didn't happen to have 2 of the same monitors on hand' for a tech demo introducing their new 'product' then that's not very professional in all honesty.

Fair enough. I'm only a casual PC gamer and I mainly enjoy RPG games (GTA, Mafia, Etc) but also some shooters like CoD4 and CSS/CSGO, but personally I've never felt like this 'issue' limited me in any way.

In fact, as said I never even noticed there was an issue.

Yeah this is a classic way of increasing the halo effect of a product. Put it next to what is perceived as an inferior product and even if the improvement of free sync tech is miniscule it'll be enhanced by the fact that the monitor is perceived as better anyway

Exactly my point what? I didn't prove anything you said.

It doesn't matter if it looks prettier. The performance of the monitor does not change on the non FS one. The FS enabled monitor(prettier one), will still show off the benefits no matter how ugly or pretty the monitor itself makes the video look. The performance of FS is still showing no matter what.

Not professional? Debatable but It's because it doesn't matter.. thats why no one ever really cared to bring it up. Because again it's not like it changed anything related to FS.
