FX6300 or FX8320?

Hi all :)

Let me cut to the chase, I have £120 to spend on upgrading my rig and the way I see it my CPU is the weakest link.

My two options are 6300 and 8320. If I got the 6300 I could either get a new keyboard (Typing this on a £12 mini keyboard) or a new heatsink (Currently on a arctic cooling freezer 13). If I got the 8320, my budget wouldn't allow for anything else. Not too sure how far I could clock the 8320 with just a Freezer 13 :/

Main uses will be gaming (BF3/4, COD4, Racing games - Grid, shift, F1 etc.), also music production from time to time, and occasional video production too.

TL;DR :

- FX 6300 + New keyboard.
- FX 6300 + 212 evo.
- FX 8320.

Hmm ok.
How far will I be able to clock it with a Freezer 13 before I run into temp issues.

I'd love 4.2Ghz+, but will that be possible..?

Okay let me rephrase.
How many volts before I start getting heat issues?
1.3..? 1.4..? :/

/Edit : Just out of curiosity, when you OC piledriver, does TurboCore automatically disable, or does it then turbo beyond the OC base clock?

Many people can get about 4.8ghz on air with a decent cooler. Volts are less of an issue compared to intel(with the cpus being super stingy) so it's too much of a problem but still watch how your cpu behaves.

TC: not an AMD overclocker but i assume it's somewhere in the BIOS options.

Ahh I've done some research and it seem I won't be doing much overclocking anyway so I'll go for the 8320.

My board is an older gen 890fxa board and while it supports Piledriver, there aren't any settings to change the TurboCore or the LLC. That basically means I might be able to get an extra 200-300mhz out of it, but I'll be having stability issues before my cooler becomes a problem :)

Because of this, I'll get the 8-core since I wouldn't be able to OC the 6-core anyway :)

Thanks for all help :)

OK thing's have once again gotten a little interesting.

a Price drop on the FX6300 means it now sits at £80, which means if I got it I could put it under AIO water.

So.

FX6300 + AIO Water (Single 120 rad)
or
FX8320 + Freezer 13 (Current)

Or even better, FX6300 + Be Quiet Dark Rock Advance..?

Just got even more interesting, buy it from Aria: https://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/AMD+%28Piledriver%29+FX-6300+3.50GHz+%284.10GHz+Turbo%29+Socket+AM3%2B+6-Core+Processor+-+Retail+?productId=52724

Edit: Realised that's probably what you're looking at and I didn't factor postage.

you get free postage from aria if you are a member on here mate, even i am tempted to get that 6300

Wow you guys really know how to make it more difficult :P
I was actually looking at amazon, it's on there for £80, with free P&P.
I'm pretty certain with going FX6300 because I really can't justify a £50 price gap between them, but I actually get paid on the 28th, which is when I'll be buying, will this deal still be on by then..? :/

What motherboard will you be using? If its a cheaper, midrange board, you wont be able to crank on the 8320 to its fullest potential. Youll need something with 8+2 power to handle the large amounts of juice that thing is going to suck down. If youve got a lower end board, youll want the 6320 instead.

I'm using a top of the range board, but from the last gen.
It's a 890FXA-GD70.
I won't be ranging the clocks, since the board doesn't have options to disable turbo core, and adjust LLC, even though it supports Vishera. That's why I'm still considering the 8320... I won't be able to OC much so in the long term it might be beneficial :/

Ah balls, I ordered a BitFenix Shinobi tonight and didn't even think about that. :( Oh well, too late now I guess, and it's not exactly extortionate delivery prices anyway

Oh, you mean the one thats right there in your sig, right in front of me, like right there? Christ I gotta start paying more attention to things.

Ok then, yeah you should be fine. 8320 all the way.

Yeah, I'll get it sorted when I get around to ordering the hardware anyway. I was originally going to get an 8350 but with the price on the 6300 I might have to reconsider what to get while waiting for Steamroller.

I'm hoping the deal will still be on and they'll still have stock (5 left according to the webpage which doesn't look promising). I can't order anything else now 'til payday (also 28th) which is when I'll make my decision.
