FX60 Blown Memory Channel

Well in all my time this one is a first - can only run single channel with the FX60, it would appear that I have managed to blow a channel :(

So while my RMA goes through, I have installed my budget back-up to keep me going.

Having a play with my OCZ PC5000 ram and a Venice 1.8Ghz 3000+ CPU.

The RAM is Boardy bound in a few days but thoguht I could play with a cheapo CPU and the sublime RAM as a package. Just wanted to see what sort of results I could get running the RAM 1:1 1T with the CPU

So Far I am up to 290x9 OCCT stable overclocking properly as in slow and steady from scratch.

First pop got me to run 3dmark 2001 @ 325*9 but was not stable.

I guess this shows that phase cooling the cheapest of CPU's has its advantages, especially if I can run it at FX57 speeds for just £83 :)

Gutted bout the FX-60 mate, but jeez thats some 3000+ clocking. Personally I think this is just an excuse for you to demolish the rankings of all 3000+'s across the world :P

One thing it could prove is that if you got £700 to spend on a CPU, there is good justification to just buy a MACH2 GT and a lower grade CPU and overclock it beyond what that £700 CPU would do on air.

Plus once you have a mach - you can keep doing the same over and over.

In the same way the Spitfire does (dual core 3800 OC'd to 2.8Ghz).

was my exact reasoning when i bought this mach, i didnt realize the complications involved though. Opportunity costs would be i could have spent hours upon hours doing other things had i purchased an fx57 at the start.

Suppose cooling is an investment, where hardware is a tool. Investment will last forever, but the tool will get worn out and need replacing...

Thats the reason i've gone for watercooling, but I realised total cost is ~£250, so approching region where phase would have been a better investment..

It's more likely that there were a number of contributing factors as to why you were not as successful on your first attempt as you would have hoped.

Plus once you learn the 'trade' (during which time everyone makes mistakes) the payback is u can clock til you drop the silliest of CPU's.

Sure the mach is an investment but there are drawbacks to it too. It makes more noise than other types of cooling, it uses quite a lot of power from the socket, it lengthens the boot up time of the pc while you wait for it to cool to boot temp. Also risk of blowing hardware. Cant easily bring the 25kg beast to a lan party.

But ive got one and think its pretty darn cool :p

Phil if you have trouble with taking 1 to a Lanparty, try taking 2 GTs + Watercooling and all the gubbins to a Lanparty in a saxo lol. That was hilarious cos the boot wouldn't close properly. Great fun moving them tho.

I have to say that the noise was actually quieter than my 120:2 rad in my watercooling. It was by far the loudest thing in my system when I had it.

It does not make more noise than some of the air cooled systems I have used -it does not make more noise than some of the watercooling set-ups I have used either (when set on full blast to get max overclock). But I take on board what you are saying, it's not totally silent either.

The low risk of blowing something is totally inline with a water cooled set-up.

Sure it's not ideal for a LAN (especially as you should let the gas settle)- but thats why shuttles were invented??

They do take longer to boot up, but it's worth the wait :D

It's 17kg not 25kg ;)
