FX-8350 Temps

Read somewhere that the temperature sensors in these CPU's is a little bit dodgy.

Every temperature reading software seems to say something different. Core Temp I believe, gets the temperature directly from the CPU Cores and this seems to always fluctuate between 10c and about 60c. HWMonitor also says the same under the CPU Temperatures section, but under the motherboard section is shows me a stable temperature (Currently 33c). AMD Overdrive currently shows 50c. If i reboot into the bios, it always seems to be around the same as the HMonitor motherboard CPU temp but not exact.

My question is.. which do I believe? if any? Could all these be wrong too?

The low idle cpu temps on FX cpus is very wonky, but the load temps should be more accurate

edit: my guess is that some software takes motherboard+cpu temp to produce final result, some only take motherboard temp, and some only cpu temp

Ah yeah.. I just kicked off Cinebench and Core Temp instantly stabilized to 33c when the cores hit 100%. As soon as it finished, started fluctuating like mad again. Very strange.

I have an 8320 and I think I can probably help you figure out what to look at and what to ignore.

If you use HWMonitor, which is what I use, you will have temperatures for the 'mainboard' and the AMD FX-8320 (in my case). The temperature labeled CPU in the mainboard tab is the temp of the CPU's actual socket whose max temperature is usually considered to be about 70C-75C max.

Then there is the package temperature in the AMD FX-8320 tab, this is the approximate temp of the CPU cores whose max temp should be about 62C.

You will have fluctuation when you are completely idle because the temp sensors in your CPU aren't actually in the cores, like with Intel, and are inherently not as accurate.

EDIT: Yea this happens with me but as soon as the temps get to about 25C-30C they stablise.

As long as it's accurate under load, I'm happy. I use Core Temp as it has a G15 applet so I can monitor temps while in-game, but downloaded HWMonitor just to see if it was any different.

On a sidenote the cooler included with the 8350 is good as a cooler , you just need to replace that fan for something better.
