Fun with RamDIsks

Yea - the speeds are laughable when you compare it to SSDs! My only issue is that I have maxed out the 32GB on my 1155 rig and Shogun 2 is too big :/

Crikies mate!! How big is the install on that? 32GB not enough? Holy mother-of-pearl Batman!!

Yea Shogun 2 is around 30GB with all the DLC. Last I checked I could *just*fit it into my RAM but that left virtually no room for my system to run on.

I've been trying of late to try and get around this. If you think about it there are only certain files that you actually need to RAMdisk. They are the large, frequently accessed ones. Conversely there are thousands of smaller files which together probably take up a lot of space and that you actually don't need to RD. The key is finding which files you need and then scripting those to run from RAM.

If you use a tool like Nirsoft's SearchMyFiles then you can tailor a search to locate these files. In my case for example I can select to search within my Shogun2 folder and limit the results to files which are greater than 1mb. What I'd end up with is an entire history of accessed files which I can list by file size. I imagine that many of the top files would all be large texture files and come from a small number of subfolders. All that needs to be done then is to RD those subfolders (or it's parent folder for ease if possible) to get the same effect without copying all the rubbish you don't actually need.

That is theory though - unfortunately I'm on my laptop at the moment and can't test it out for a little while.
