Frame Rating and AMD crossfire issue

AMD has provided Ryan with new version of their drivers. It is a Prototype and not even near full release to the public. But as it seems they are able to reduce the frame variance significant!! High frame variance meens inconstant frame rates means micro stutter and runt frames -> bad stuff.

keep in mind that the frame metering is done on software where Nvidea has implemented that in their hardware. It will take a while untill amd will be implementing that into hardware but i think they have done a pretty good job with the new frame metering algorithm so far.

I have read that today and got 13.5 running myself, but that is for sure not the prototype version ryan has access to :D I am really curious if there is a difference in frame variance with cfx, but i don't believe.
 
Interesting info in this thread! I thought it was going to be another useless GPU flame war. :) Very interesting reading. Wouldn't sway me to the Nvidia side of the fence, but interesting nonetheless. :D
 
Very simialar results to what Ryan discovered in his test. This is going into the right direction :) I am curious what amd will be able to achieve if they start to get this either implemented on hardware (like Nvidea does) or they get the drivers very close the the results we see from Nvidea.

I can't remember where I read it but they can't do it with hardware as it's not on the GPU. Nvidia put it on there god knows when so AMD are going to be at the mercy of software,something they've never really been any good at.

This is going to be a game to game fix IMO and will be a lot of work. However, right now they may not bother so much as many reviewers have lauded the 7990 without even knowing about FCAT and runt/dropped. So as of right now the wool is still being pulled over the eyes of the public.

It's good to see Hardware canucks getting aboard FCAT and even going so far as to putting out "viewed FPS" or whatever they call it. This phenomenon will be slow to catch on but it will eventually.

Apologies for not getting back to this topic as intended. Things has been manic at work and home for a little while so I haven't had much time to spend on OC3D :(

I do not have access to the hardware to test like some of the reviewers do (capture card for example) although I do use the frame latency in FRAPS to have a more detailed look. I have to rely on my eyes for screen capture part of it. I'm aware that this is subjective but I do it to make gameplay smoother - I can't stand jitter so I do a lot of tinkering to eliminate it.

In my experience vsync has often helped in reducing jitter. I have used it in many games and felt a significant improvement in the smoothness of frame delivery. I'm not saying that it has an effect on runt frames but the experience is markedly better and thoroughly enjoyable.

Certainly it is/was not a universal fix. I recently went about trying to sort out FarCry 3's issue in xfire. Vsync made absolutely no difference. I also tinkered with different methods of multi-card rendering, altering visual settings are anything else I could think of with no success. So I reset the settings and tried a frame limiter on its own - suddenly the game became nice and smooth.

Xfire has traditionally been a pain and in order to make it work smoothly you sometimes have to work at it. That is nothing new - I'm sure this runting has been going on for years and probably nvidia suffered from it too for a while. It's really poor form and I'm glad that AMD are working on a fix for it. It will be interesting to see how it affects comparative performance between the red and green camps once the issue is sorted.
 
im actually running these 13.5 and maybe its just me, but ive not seen any improvement, ive only tried Tomb Raider, but ill try a few more things later today and report back
 
As far as I'm aware this new technology has not been released to the public yet, hence why you won't really see any major improvements..

I can't remember whether it was PCPER or Hardware canucks who were talking about it but they said (it was probably Ryan tbh) that the way AMD have to do it is different to Nvidia.. Nvidia have hardware built into their cards to do it but AMD doesn't. I would imagine Nvidia 'inherited' this function from 3DFX given that all of their swan song cards were SLI..

AMD are going to have to do it with the driver itself on a software level.
 
FYI guys, I just installed the newest AMD beta drivers (13.5), and things look a lot smoother. I haven't done extensive testing yet, but the first impression is very good.
 
Really? I didn't expect any improvement just yet although I admit that I haven't tested the new drivers yet. I read somewhere recently that they were aiming for the general release to fix this around June time.
 
Yeah I thought Ryan said in the last podcast that the prototype driver gave a good improvement, not the latest available driver.

Yeah it's definitely not released yet.

As M&P said AMD are expected to roll this driver out in June.

It's not an easy thing to do by all means and I certainly don't envy AMD. But fair play, seems they're getting stuck in.

I'm just curious now as to what happens when it's working. Does it keep the framerates as they were with all the runts and dropped frames in? or does scaling become a little worse and FPS lower?

Intrigued !
 
Just to keep things clear. The 13.5 driver is NOT the prototype driver Ryan is talking about. The prototype driver is based on 13.2 version and no where even close to beeing reales to the public.

13.5 does not improve the xfire frame times at all. Just a standart driver update we see every few month.
 
Sorry if I mislead anyone. I didn't mean to imply that the 13.5 betas were the prototype driver Rooker is referring to. I only went CrossFire on Friday, and did some runs in Furmark and Valley. With the previous 13.2 drivers I noticed obvious "stuttering", especially in a full screen Furmark burn test. With the 13.5 beta drivers, those benchmarks are MUCH smoother, no stuttering.

But as I said, this is just a first impression, and I haven't done extensive testing, gaming, etc. Sorry if I mislead anyone! My bad.

Unless you have the FCAT software and a suitable capture rig then I wouldn't bother doing any extensive testing.

The only way to get the data you would need to be able to say "OK this is working properly" is an FCAT set up and that would cost you a couple of thousand dollars at least.

All you can really do right now is suffer it out until AMD sort out the drivers so that you know for fact that everything is working OK.
