For Gaming Only

OK fist off please read the list below as it will inform you of the parts I will be using. Secondly money is not an object, I want the very best not the second best. Third please don't comment on the rig I will post another thread for that.

Asus PB278Q Monitor

Blue Ray Drive

7930K processor

Rampage IV Extreme Mobo

Coolermaster Cosmos 2 Case

Windows 7 64-bit Home OS

Evga SuperNova Nex 1500 PSU

8 G-Skill 8 GB RipjawsZ RAM

2 Nvdia GTX 690 GPU

Crucial M4 512GB SSD

Now my question is which is better for gaming only the WD Velociraptor 1TB or the Momentus XT 750GB as I can't find any real world comparisons only benchmark tests

Thanks Mix

Youll want the most capacity for games as theyre getting bigger and bigger. The Raptor 1TB would be my choice out of those 2.

Now hurry up and get that thread up concerning your rig cause Ive really gotta talk to ya about that power supply!

lol...
Seriously dude, there's no way people aren't going to comment on this rig.

2 690s will actually reduce performance. And if it's for gaming you're better off with 1155 and a 3570k or 3770k instead of the 3930k.

If money's no object, why not get another SSD and put everything on there? Not sure how you'd fill more than 512gb on an SSD with games?

You have way more problems with this rig than which hard drive to buy...

for gaming stick your games on the SSD that you have bought

the veliciraptor should be replaced with a WD caviar black

2 690's is just stupid, just get 2 x 680's

7930k processor?

1500w PSU is just ludicrous

OK fine, since Im not the first one Ill not bite my lip.

That power supply is awful in addition to being WAY overpriced. Its getting shredded by review sites as just being horrible and failing tests and all that. For a lot less money, get a Seasonic Platinum 1000 or 860 watt. Those are the best power supplies on the market right now.

A pair of GTX690's would be overkill even for 5760x1200 resolution. Thats 4 GTX680's which is just crazy.

And there is no such thing as a 7930K. Obviously youre talking about a 3930K which is an outstanding processor so good choice there.

Trim off a GTX690 and get that Seasonic Platinum and youll be set. ;)

There's really no point going for Velociraptors these days, as the 7200.14 Seagates are only slightly worse in terms of performance and any modern SSD's thrashes them. The Momentus XT is just a hybrid drive, so there's no point using it as a storage drive either.

Dude if money is no object like you say just get a second 512gb ssd it will be faster and quieter than any hdd, then get a green hard drive for media storage.

512gb should be loads for games anyway. Think of it this way max payne 3 which is a huge game according to steam needs 35gb of space. Now that game is huge as in 2-3 times bigger than bf3. You would be able to install MP3 on a single 512gb ssd nearly 13 times if you exclude windows being on there too.

As for the rest of your rig I cant really comment on it as it just hurts my head way to much because your post contradicts itself a few times.

And it's even the same Mix as the other thread you just posted on! With an almost identical overpowered gaming set-up...

Ya I know I found his other rig after I saw this but I posted in the other thread as I was there before I came back here.

That makes my rig look weak and my rig is a bit overkill for gaming as they wont use the 3930k. But then I didn't buy my rig just for gaming.

Computer stores would love you pal.
>2011 for gaming = pointless
>2x 690's = pointless
>1500w psu = pointless unless you expect to run a phase change unit as well.
>raptor drives. no no no. Unless you like the sound of a chainsaw in your case. Forget it. High capacity ssds, hybrid drives (like you mention) or wd blacks. Geez in a case that big, raid a heap of of 2tb Blacks in raid 10.
>64gb ram = pointless. &
Win 7 home = epic fail with that much ram - Basic (8gb max) Premium (16gb max) Pro & above have support for up to 192gb

Save yourself some coin and build a really nice watercooling loop and go for parts that will game just as well.

3570k
Maximus V Extreme
16gb high speed ram
(that crucial drive as you mention is really nice)
2tb wd black (you have the space so RAID a few)
2x7970 or 2x680
Corsair AX850 with sleeving kit
(your blu ray drive)
Windows 8 pro (just get the start8 app)
Cosmos II (ugly imho)

the rest of your saved $$$ spend it on the meanest watercooling loop you can get.
