Folding Rig MSI Board DOA?

Hi Guys.

Well i thought we almost had a complete SX folding rig when i got the processor cooler and graphics card this morning.

However, after putting it all together with only the hard disk missing, i decided to give it a test run, and this is what happened....

* Lights come on

* Fans come on (both molex and motherboard header ones)

* No display on screen

* No beeps

So i tried the following to no avail:

* Swapped ram

* Removed ram

* Removed graphics card

* Removed all other devices like cd-rom.

* Checked ATX power connections were in ok

* Removed processor

None of this caused the machine to produce error beeps!

I then tried booting up the machine with the heatsink removed to feel if the processor was getting hot - it wasn't, the processor, northbridge and southbridge were stone cold.

This leads me to believe that the board is DOA (what a supprise from MSI) - what do you guys think?

I think grounding is an issue, you may have shorted the board if it's a junky case. Possibly PSU. Very brave, to put your fingers on a CPU without heatsink to see if it was booting. I did that once with a VIA C3. Never again, will I do it.

Try putting the mobo on a piece of cardboard and booting it outisde of the case. Also try a different PSU.

If you do decide to RMA it, be prepared to wait 'bout 3-4 weeks to send it in, get it processed, and get it back. It took me about 1 1/2 months to get mien back.

EDIT: Might as well give it a shot, clear the CMOS and or make sure the jumper isn't in the "CLEAR" position.

Yeah tried it out of the case but it didnt help (bear in mind that the case is my old Chieftec case).

I wont be RMA'ing it as its prolly an old mobo - it was from ebay.

Yeah thats what i thought - stupid POS MSI.

I thought that it might have been the processor, but you'd normally get some kind of beepage from the mobo for that wouldnt you? And the chance of a processor being doa is like 1 in 10000 aint it?

I'll have a word with kemp as he bought the board and see if we can get a refund from the seller - god i hate sending shit back.

i ) Check the BIOS chip is seated correctly (it may be damaged or wrongly flashed)

ii) If the Core of the CPU is a newer one it may need to be Upgraded (can you post w/o a CPU)

Cheers for the ideas, but its a Celeron 1.7 - so it should defo be detected

The bios chip seems to be in ok, and i've tried all the usual cmos reset

CRAP!!! can u post with-out a CPU in ?? ......

even if the MOBO was damaged it has like a 70 % chance of posting ... incorrectly flashed bios?? seller prolly listed it as 'Full Working Order' which is technically true if the bios is incorrectly flashed

Mobo was sold as new therefore untested. I will e-mail him to get a replacement and go from there

Anything over 6 months old is no longer considered modern, and that is a few years old

Apparently the Celly 1.7 is 478, but is not compatible with the mobo. I bought it after asking all and sundry whether it was compatible and now it appears it is not. I'm an Intel n00b - so it aint my fault Jim's selling it andgetting a cheapo 2.4GHz one
