Folding effects on hardware

Would I be better off just running the SMP and forget about GPU folding on my main rig. I7-2600K, 8 GB Mushkin Blackline Ridgeback, R6950 2GB Twin Frozr II?

The PPD for this card is only around 2000 PPD and it seems to slow down the SMP client.

Yeh mate, run SMP on its own and if you see a positive difference, just fold with the CPU

Thanks, I just picked up a GTX 460 on ebay to go into my folding rig.

It's addictive isn't it

Thats the spirit!!!! Hooked already.

Out of intrest, what version 460 is it? The 1gb or 768mb?

Just as a FYI for anyone reading, While the 768mb version is faster at gaming because of its extra ROPS and memory buss size, they are both the same speed at folding. So if you get a 460 off ebay just for folding and you have a choise and there are a decent different in price, take the cheapest.

A few yeats ago I had the chance to fold on a 8600GT along side a 8800GT. I seem to remember it getting about 1500 PPD but I can't be certain.

Oh and SEBAR. When folding on the nvidia cards, if your computer can take a bit of extra heat, its worth folding -advmethods on the GPUs. Not only will you get slightly better PPD on the GPUs but they take less away from the CPU to than non -advmethods.

Yes it is. I woke up early this morning to check my status.

it is an EVGA GTX 460 768mb. grabbed it for $110 (U.S. Dollars). I am going to use the 8600GT until the GTX 460 arrives.

OK

Don't feel like you are missing out on points over a 1gb version. becuase as I said, you won't be

The other good thing about the 460 range is that they are clocked really conservatively. Mine is happy to sit at 800mhz folding 24/7. O have bumped the vcore up from 1v to 1.012v but that was just to be on the safe side, i don't know if it actually needs it.

The biggest problem with most 460 is that the VRMs on most cards dont have heatsinks on them. So don't push the vcore too high. Other than that solid cards and great folders.

@KUP..............she's an old pentium 4 but running 2 gig corsair ram and a PNY 9600 512mb (all on windows 7)............and as solid as a rock !

It's not really worth folding the Pentium 4, you would probably only get a couple of hundred points per day out of that.

The 9600 might be ok for a couple of thousand. If you run MSI afterburner, downclock the core but overclock the shaders you should get some extra points while using less power.

Out of intrest. Is that the only rig to fold on or an extra on hidded away?

She's my second backup............my first is at present undergoing a rebuild and that will be more than up to the job................will let you know when she's finished

It's just fantastic how some of these old rigs just run and run....................no matter what you throw at them

Cool, fair enough.

Wait a moment. I just had a thought.

Is it an Ati 9600 or nvidia 9600 :s

Edit

No Problem

I think I may have to retire my T61 from folding. The CPU fan is dieing. While at my perents i'll get the laptop opended up and see if a bit of oil will do the trick... failing that my old man may have a spare or there is always ebay.

I don't really want to retire it considering I managed to get a T7700 in it running 2.6 Dual IDA ... so I guess I will just have to wait and see.

It's worth hanging onto some old gear................like I said that old pentium 4 is as solid as a rock and has pulled me out of the crap numorous times.

My previouls rig went to my dad otherwise it would have made a nice folding rig.

Turns out, not long after I gave it to him I decided to sort myself out a folding rig
