Hi everyone!

First time posting and first time building my own PC. I’ve posted on a few danish sites, but without much luck.

I’ve researched for about a month now and my component list this far looks like this:

- Intel Core i5-4690K or Intel Core i7-4790K
- Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD
- Asus Z97-Pro
- Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX
- Kingston HyperX Beast 2 x 8GB DDR3-1866 MHz
- EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2
- NZXT Kraken X61 CPU Cooling

Should I avoid, change or add anything here?

The plan is to build it into a Fractal Design Define R5 Windowed case. My plan is to put the CPU Cooling radiator in the front with an extra fan(case comes with 1 as standard) Can anyone confirm that it will fit and work? I’ve made a picture showing what I mean.

The PC is mainly for gaming high end games and streaming at the same time. Its going to be in my living room so style and noise level is very important to me!

IMO everything looks pretty good but i would change the Cooling over to the new Corsair AIO water Cooler H110i if you like it and depends on the cost in your country.

With the case i'm not sure there are guys on here that know about that stuff more then i do, they will be able to help you out with that

Good luck on your build dude :)

Don't buy the EVO SSD,

Reports are coming in with test results to show that that these degrade to terrible performance over time, and the Firmware that addressed the issue does NOT fix it. The Samsung PRO however is not affected.

Basically the EVO issue is due to the triple-bit per cell memory.

we are talking performance drops of 500mb/s when new, down to a pathetic read speed of 35mb/s after a few months. Even when wiping it clean and reformatting, the performance was down to 430mb/s.

- Define R5

The 4690k is enough for gaming, if you also do some video editing, you might think about getting the 4790k

afaik only the 840 EVO is affected by this problem, but I'd recommmend getting a Crucial M550 to be save

I can't recommend getting a 970 until we know more about the issue with the memory

A 550w psu is enough for this build, for example a Corsair RM550

The rest looks fine, good luck with your first build!

4690K is a lovely processor so i'd go with that.

970 I would still go with because for the money it's still a gorgeous card. Don't let the 3.5gb issue scare you. Instead just think of it as a 3.5gig card with a little headroom. If you're gaming at 1080p you will 100% be fine.

As above I would advice a diff SSD one of the samsung pros if you can afford it

Also as above consider the Corsair AIOs over the kraken

PSU I would stick with the EVGA G2. they're made by superflower and are lovely little PSUs. You can also get separate cable kits for them should you want to in the future

aye as others have said i would go with a Corsair H105, its a fantastic piece of kit and can run fans at quiet speeds while maintaining great temps

Thats the 840 EVO that is affected by the bug. The 850 isn't affected.

OP, if you want to use your PC for gaming you'd be best to get an i5 and spend the extra on a bigger SSD.

You should get the Superflower 650W gold PSU tom reviewed a while ago, it will be ample for your system and with the extra money you probably have saved you should be able to buy a HDD of 1TB of more for massive storage for music, movies etc

About the cooling; The H110i is around 150 dollars in Denmark. It's a bit of money, but I don't mind paying a bit extra for something good. I don't plan on doing this again next year, lets just put it that way. Should I stick with the original fans if I choose the 110i or change them? In case I need to change them, would it be to something like http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=82&lng=en ?

SSD wise; I will look into the Pro version and stay clear of the 840 EVO, I haven't looked at the Crucial harddrives, but I will do that now. Not SSD related, but the plan is to buy some TB worth of drive when I get a bit money for it, its not expensive, but again, not needed to start the computer up.

When it comes to the graphic card, I think I am going to stick with the gtx970 despite the "nerf" but it is indeed pretty important info to have!

PSU, I'll have a look at the one Tom reviewed as mentioned in #8, I haven't heard of it, so thanks for the heads up!

The Noctua fans will be slightly better, but the H110i comes with 140mm versions of Corsair's SP series fans which are already pretty damn good. I wouldn't say it's worth the extra money for the Noctuas.

And if you do find them loud or anything, fans are easily switched out at a later stage.

Personally I own an MX100 256GB for my main rig as OS and productivity software drive and I love it. It's cheaper than the Samsung Pro series and pretty much all higher end SSDs max out Sata III speeds these days anyway. The site is in Dutch, but graphs are a universal language I guess ;)

SuperFlower is a really, really good brand. Dare I say it? Yeah probably: They seem to be the new Seasonic at this stage. Here's the review:

It's gonna take a lot more than a few awesome products to beat out Seasonic. They may be the next big PSU company but Seasonic isn't going down in quality. It's just more tough competition.

Tough competition is what we need.

Regarding OP

Apologies. The other guys are correct. The 850 EVO is not affected by the degradation so you are good with that SSD. :)
Only the 840 Pro is affected.

Maybe I should've put 'A new Seasonic', I never said they were better I just meant that judging by the way things are right now, they are at least as good.

Seasonic tend to make more costly PSUs then Superflower. Atleast in the UK superflower tend to be £20-£30 cheaper than the equivilent Seasonic. If you count EVGA as Superflower as well, the gap gets bigger.

Okay, I'm kinda hooked on the Superflower 650 W PSU now, job well done, guys!

I just think it would be a shame to go with that PSU with the good looking white lightning and not anything like it anywhere else in the case, since the PSU is going to stay below window height. Any ideas or suggestions on how to get some more light in the case?

I'm not looking for fans in a million colours or lightning that flashes to the bass, more like some stylish, clean and good looking white'ish light.

I'm running all 840 EVO SSDs in my main rig. I've not had the firmware issue yet. Not scared about failure because I back stuff up.

I've been thinking, should I go with something like a Noctua Air Cooler for the CPU Cooling? I'm not a huge fan of the colors on the fans, but I've been told that they come in black in the industrial model.

So what would you guys pick and why? Feel free to come up with a third option, just remember that it's my first build and silence is golden :)
