First New Build for a while

I have decided it is time to build myself a new pc as it's been 8 years since my last build and wanted to get something close to newest gear so I am not behind from the beginning like I usually am.

Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated, I do fix pc for a living but I work with companies who are not on the bleeding edge so sometimes get left behind.

  • I will be using it for Media so want 4k movie playback for future.
  • I will also need it for gaming, not extreme but would like to play most new games on 1080p 60fps with high settings (maybe 4k later but that is a whole other cost).

Here is what I currently have purchased:
  • NZXT H440 (White) Case
  • Superflower Leadtek (white) Platinum 1200w PSU
  • Kraken X61 AIO Cooler
  • BitFenix Alchemy (White) extension cables
  • Asus Sata (Both Black and White ones) braided cables

Here is what I thinking of purchasing:
  • Samsung 950 Pro 250gb M.2 drive (os drive)
  • Samsung 850 Evo 512gb (games drive)
  • Asus Z170-A Motherboard
  • i7 6700k CPU
  • 16gb (2x8) Hyperx Savage 2400mhz memory (Not sue if to go 2400mhz or higher)
  • The GPU i am stuck on at the moment I am thinking GTX 970.

If anyone has any recommendations for changes or advice on experience using or setting up any of these products please let me know.

Thanks

Woah, should have held off buying that PSU as that is massively overkill unless you're running 3 (or 4!) GPUs.

Apart from that it sounds reasonably solid to me. Are you going to be overclocking?

I would go X99 and 5820k. That leaves you 5930k, 5960x and the entire Broadwell E range as upgrades later on.

I got that PSU as one it was white not many white PSU and I got it for just £120.

I was thinking about the x99 but for double the price of the z170 mb i don't know if it is justified.

MSI X99A SLI PLUS isn't double the price. That's a pretty good x99 board that isn't super high end like ROG ones are. Yes it's a little more expensive but in return you get more cores and threads on the CPU along with future upgrade ability to Broadwell-E.

Looks good to me. My only nitch it the cable extensions. IMO you should try to just sleeve your PSU cables yourself. Not too terrible difficult, just time consuming. Those extensions tend to cause a clutter in the cable management area, and TBH make it difficult to effectively tidy up your cables in the back. I'm running custom sleeved extensions and as soon as I get the time, and a little extra money for the supplies, I am going to sleeve the PSU cables and dump the extensions.

Just my opinion though.

You wont get decent 4k playback on a 970 you are better off getting either a Fury-x or 980ti especially if you plan to game at 4k whilst keeping looking pretty and as has been said dont use extensions get cablemod cables if you dont want to sleeve them yourself

X99 and 5820k also gets my vote. If you choose wisely an x99 motherboard doesn't cost much more than a Z170, the 5820K is the same price give or take than the 6700K and you get two more cores and four more threads and lose the useless onboard GPU. And your future upgrade path includes 10 core 20 thread CPUs. Hell, you can even drop in an 18 core 36 thread Xeon right now if you were building a rendering workstation.

Drop back to a 6600k and spend the money on GPU's. If you don't do any time critical CPU intensive work like rendering then a 8 or 12-thread CPU isn't going to be beneficial. Extra budget on graphics cards would be very noticeable when playing games at 4k, even if you start with one 980Ti adding a seccond is at least a viable route to upgrade for 4k. Stick with ATX if your planning an air cooled SLI setup too.
