first build

hi everyone,

so I'm doing my first build and i need a little though on it

CPU: I7 2600K

Motherboard: Maximus IV Extreme

Ram: corsair Vengeance 16GB Dual Channel DDR3

video card: EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti

PSU: corsair HX850 — 80 PLUS® Silver

I;m using an NZXT phantom for my case, but one of my problem is i don't know if these components are compatible so some help would be welcome?

my other problem is i wanted to use one of corsair coolers ether the h50 or h70 but i read on the NZXT forums that nether of these are able to be used in the phantom due to the fan placement. Is that true and if so any recommendations on something that would be just as capable?

thanks

What do you plan on using the rig for? 16GB of RAM seems massive overkill to me, i'd get 8GB and use the money saved to get a GTX570.

And as for the cooler, i'd get the NH-D14 the performance as said in the previous post is better than the corsair kits.

Hey Jesse,

Mind me asking what the rigs going to be for, gaming, video editing ect?

Also what made you choose the 2600K and the ASUS Maximus IV Extreme if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers,

ooh yeah missed that out, the vengeance wont fit under the d14 or atleast i dont think it does... get some mushkin ridgeback / G Skill ripjaws x

I'm mainly going for gaming and photo editing. In the end though it probably going to but just for extremely high end gaming.

I picked the i7 2600k plus the Maximus cause I'd like to get in to over clocking down the line.

Ya I know it's over kill for ram but why not the board can support 32gb.

But I'll check that cooler out

Ok, for gaming and photo editing I'd go for the 2500K. You really won't be able to tell the difference between them with gaming or photo editing and you'd be better of putting the money you'd save towards a better graphics card setup. Before deciding on the maximus, take a look at the review of the UD7. Personally thats the one I'd go for and its going to save you a bit more money.

With regards to RAM, people say that 8GB is overkill and that 4GB is all you need for gaming. If I was you I'd go for 8GB now, and then you can always add another 8GB later if you really feel you must.

With the money you'd save from the above changes I'd put more money towards your graphics card(s) by either going for a GTX 570 and then maybe buying another in the future or if you just want to build a rig and stick with it then two 6850's. Here's the site I use to get a good idea of what cards to get for the money I want to spend http://www.tomshardw...ew-32134-5.html The GTX 570 and 6850's are just my personal preference.

I already have the motherboard. The only things I dont have is the processor a coolent unit, ram and the graphics card. Thanks for the advice.

I usually go with the entry level graphics card cause I upgrade my card every year or so, but since I'm building this i might go with an sli step up and a higher end card.

If you're just gaming, then 16GB is a complete waste, the games themselves won't use anymore than 8, probably no more than 4 in most cases.

Get 8GB of RAM and use the money saved to get a GTX570 or 580, you won't get particularly 'extreme high ending' gaming with a 560.

OK that does make sense, i guess i should look in to different 8 GB of ram and ether a 570 or a 580

OK thanks

i probably should have mention my roommate is going to probably be using it for some music recording. (i've already told him he's going to have to get his own hard drive)so a sound card is need I'm thinking one of the ASUS ones or something from the Titanium series
