First build decisions..

Aha well please go lightly as this will probably look elementary compared to what you guys are making(; but I am looking to build my first computer! Im running a poor excuse for a laptop now with specs too low to post about, but my plan is to build a machine to completely blow this one out of the water. I'll be using programs like Cinema 4D, Vegas, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other intensive programs so I want something suited for them. Im not really a gamer so I wont be needing an EXREMELY high end card, but I chose Gigabytes SOC 560TI because of HD video playback and aftereffects utilizing the GPU. Now this is extremely out of order, but my main point is around the lines of "will this all work together". Also I was wondering if I should stick with the P67 UD5 or go ahead and get the UD7 because I am looking to overclock. Hopefully the picture attatched to this post will show you guys what I have in mind. *Forgot a CD/DVD burner.

THANKS!

Dang a 1200 watt psu?? That may be a tad overkill lol. The UD5 Will overclock just fine, as most P67 boards will. The big thing with the UD7 is you can run dual 16x slots, instead of 8x/8x which on my sort of budget, ill take 8x/8x all day. I would save some money by cutting back on the psu, a quality corsair 750 or 800 watt will be good and leaves you plenty of room to run SLI. Take the saved money and put it towards an SSD drive for your OS and commonly used Apps and Games. That will yeild more noticeable speed than anything else you can do imo. G.skill Ripjaws will save you some money over your kingston. I'm just thrifty, so take it as you will lol, But it all adds up, 50 here, 50 there, and boom your SSD is paid for.

*EDIT I don't think ripjaws will fit under the D14, so disregard that part. Personally Id just get a kit of redline and call it good. But i'm not an editor, I just think they are sexay.

Yeah I know the 1200psu would be a little much...

But yeah, Im not really loooking for running dual graphics cards in this, but it seems like a lot of the boards im looking at that have good power delivery, I/O connections, and things of that nature seem to have TONS of PCI E slots, but I only need one(:

Well, I think the more money you save the bigger and faster SSD you can afford. Which in all reality, a nice SSD fastest thing you will notice. I mean, even a UD3 or UD4 are options. But I would like having an extra pci-e slot just incase, you never know when a killer game will come out. Everything else looks pretty good, but with a nice budget like you have, you have to squeeze an SSD in there lol.

Alright that's cool I'll probably stick with the UD5 because of the I/O options, and since one of the PCIE lanes is wired for 16x.(I could be wrong)

What wattage PSU should I be looking at..?

Also with the SSD thing, If I get an SSD and transfer all of my programs from my laptop HDD to that SSD will I have to re-input the serials..?

Well, the top slot, on all the UD3-UD7 boards will be wired for 16x as long as ur running single card. As far as the PSU I would go for a corsair 700-750 that should be PLENTY of juice insase you want to SLI. If you never want to go SLI, just grab a 550-600. If you buy an SSD I would use it as just the boot drive, and a few apps. Meaning you will have to do a fresh install of windows on it. You can transfer all of your apps onto your new HDD you have in the list. As far as the serials, I'm not sure.

Okay well I was looking at other memory and was wondering if this would work on the UD7 because it says that it's a triple channel kit but I believe the UD7 only supports dual channel memory. Will it be backwards compatable?

Im only interested in the UD7 as I said before because of all the connectivity and room to upgrade and add on in the future. ALSO what are the benefits of Windows 7 ultimate over windows 7 home or any other cheaper version of the OS?

Okay I have changed a few things now and would like to know your opinion.(I took off the perriferals because I can get monitors, keyboards, and mice for cheap since my parents work at best buy) (;

My cart looks like this:

HAF X

WD 1TB HDD

Gigabyte SOC 560TI

Corsair 750 watt PSU

Mushkin black line memory (3x4gb)

Gigabyte P67 UD7

2600K

NHD 14

Corsair performance 3 series SSD 64gb

Sound good?

Ok, there is no difference in dual channel kits, and triple channel kits, all it means is triple channel memory comes in sets of 3's while dual channel comes in sets of 2's. They are the exact same. Since p67 supports dual channel...just look for a dual channel kits for P67 boards. Triple channel kit will work, you will just have to use 2 instead of three, because if you put 3 in, the memory will run in single channel mode which defeats the purpose. So dual channel you can only run 2 or 4 sticks of ram. Triple channel = 3 or 6 sticks, no in-between. Hope that makes sense :/

Windows 7 Ultimate just basically has extra user interface features, like aero shake, aerosnap, Xp compatibilty mode, im sure there are heaps of other things. But I think windows 7 home works fine for most people. Also your going to want a 64bit windows to take advantage of all that ram.

Ah thank you I learned something new. I thought the channels had to do with speed. But thank you I get it now!

Now that the whole RAM thing is cleared up. I have narrowed down the memory and I was wondering if the Corsair Dominator ram would fit under the D14. The only other option I see (4x4GB wise) would be kingston RAM.

Its all about learning! It becomes an obsession to be honest. I was looking up 4x4 kits, and everything looks too tall, the vengeance, the gskill. The kingston looks lower profile. I'm not sure if the dominator clears Dominators or not to be honest, so I think my help has outlived its usefulness lol. I'm sure someone else can chime in on the dominator/D14 front. But if the Gskill ripjaws fit, those will save you some moolah.

just going to add a note in here for you I'm assuming since you use after effects you use premiere aswell just remember that your project has to be saved on the same drive that premiere is installed on(we discovered this is class too late lol) and projects get pretty massive so be aware it may not be suitable for premiere, aftereffects or flash to be installed on and SSD where space is at a premium:)

I'd probably still go with the ud5 but thats just personal preference both awesome boards. The corsair dominator won't fit under a d14.

^that'll fit under the d14 if you want to go with 16gb there are afew 8gb alternatives though
