Download CCLeaner here and open it and go to the issues button on the left and just scan for issues then hit the fix selected issues button.

Yeah I've heard of problems under x64. You could always try right clicking on the exe and running it in compat mode.Otherwise there is an x64 version of Firefox in alpha stages.

I used it for a while, it works and thats about it really.

are you choosing to install/run as an admin?

many times vista will produce errors because an executable needs write permissions for either files, folders, or registry keys

usually you can get by by running things with admin privileges

i've got vista ult x64 installed on another partition, tho i pretty much never use it

i did set it up with most of my apps tho and although firefox was no problem for me, i have heard of others having difficulties because of the vista so-called security methods

i've also heard of people running just the xpicleanup.exe as an admin

[edit]

found this on the mozillazine forums relating to (another?) bug with xpicleanup in vista:

I went through Windows Vista: Open the C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder and delete the "xpicleanup.dat" file (related bug report). The "AppData" folder is hidden by default; either enable viewing of hidden files and folders or go to "Start -> Start Search" and type in %APPDATA% to open it. You may need to first end the "xpicleanup" process, if found, in Windows Task Manager and delete the file "xpicleanup.exe" in the Firefox installation directory [5].

Posted on the knowledge base.

Ok, this is what I've done and so far is working:

After you try to re-install Firefox and the error message appeared, go to task manager (ctrl+alt+del). Under the tab 'Processes', the last (listed by name) process is the xpi... Select it with left-click and click on "end process". That should let you install FF again.

Now, in order to run it, YOU MUST right-click it every single time, and select 'run as admin..'. That gets rid of the problem.

If by mistake instead of right-clicking, blah blah blah, you just double-click the icon, don't panic. Just go to task manager again, end the xpi process and try it again (this time following the instruction).

I hope it works for you just as fine as it works for me.

This works:

1)run the installer

2)open the task manger

3)stop all the processes named xpicleanup.exe

4)firefox installer crashed

5)run the firefox installer again

6)voila!

[edit]

By deleting the "xpicleanup.dat" file(C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder) , you will avoid having to run firefox as administrator. That was the key after finally getting firefox to install by running the setup as adminstrator after killing all the xpicleanup processses in taskmanager. Works great now after deleting this file.
