Fileserver E6xxx or Q6xxx

Gotta build a kind of home fileserver for some1 with a little twist to it.

Now the customer, if u like, has a wealth of hardware already available, the cpus of which are in the title. Mobos of a great standard also, so they're not really in question - 4g memory is easy too.

Thing being, I know for a fact they're going to want a workstation build shortly afterwards, and probably a gaming rig - so even tho there is a wealth of hardware available, it still remains that some thought needs to go into this.

The fileserver, of sorts, is going to be built and I'll have it for trial with me for 4 weeks or so to check out, but it's only going to have 2 or 3 tasks. 1) Serve file (ofc) 2) Handle downloading automagically (which I've been toying with and have something in mind that uses a bit of memory but not much cpu) 3) [possibly] a virus check run at a set time. I may sneak a few console folding things on their at low cpu % too, but this isn't the main focus, this is just stealing idle cpu cycles opportunistically.

OS is in debate, but no big decision here really. Infact nix or windows doesn't make much difference to myself, I may just follow their wants. Personally I want to install Leapard server just to see what it's like. Not important tho.

My question is. I have a quad doing something very similar for me atm, but it seems very very wasted. I do wonder if just using a dual core would be enough ?

As far as serving files, not much goes on there - and only 1 user, possibly 2 infrequently. Downloading stuff isn't a 24/7 running task, neither is any virus scanning - the biggest thing is a sneaky folding console or 2.

What u think E6xxx or Q6xxx ?

I think at hand would be an E6850, which I believe is 3g at stock. (ofc I'll put a pu55y oc on it cos... well principle I guess)

Yeah unless I get an unexpected call asking for the unit to do other work besides, I'll go down the dual route.

unless you file serving to the world CPU's relay isn't that important as fast hard drives are and decent reliable memory is. If cash is not a problem then ECC memory is the way to go (if you can still get it).

got to say personally if it was me i would get them a pre built file server with long warranty on it. This will not only save you time but all so save you building it. There are some real dammed good options out there atm. If the system is a business class system then i would get a dell file server as i have had nothing but good expreance with dell servers. If there is no problems with money then head over to a HP system.

Just a something for you to consider.

When it comes to the gaming system this is when you can out class and out pace pre built systems. So you showing your customer that they are in you mind not you wallet ;) ...
