Fallout 4 - PC Graphics Settings Menu Revealed

I blame Iron Galaxy, plain and simple.

Even killer instinct has been ruined in my eyes. When they took over for season 2, they revamped the menu system, details and combos. Now I get fps lag on the damn menus for one, and dont get me started on the gameplay. The fluidity of the fighting is stuttering now.

Just for those who don't think the graphics have changed much since fallout 3.

No offence, but that is a really silly comparison. You have 7 years separating the games, not to mention that FO3 was also pretty dire when it came out so of course FO4 looks better than it. However does that mean it is good or acceptable? Well that's for everyone else to decided but imho when I look at the competition, I would say certainly not for an 8th gen exclusive.

Would you rather all games be like The Order:1866? Beautiful but almost completely lacking in terms of game play and mechanics? What is it's competition? What games offer the same level of content? I can guarantee without even touching it that there is easily 100 hours of gameplay in this game. I realize as you said it is rather subjective and I will admit I am certainly biased towards this franchise however I can't think of another title that offers something similar, I am happy to be corrected of course :)

i don't know if people understand that you have resources in life and you have to use them in the best way you possibly can..
if you just make a FPS where the game mechanics are basically the same year in year out. and all you have to do is make it look nice play well "even though they don't really do that part" and make a few more landscapes to fight in then its not really difficult to abandon story for graphics..

Wolfeinstein the new order for instance, the story for that was comical. the progression was terrible. parts where progression would have stopped were filled with unexplained cut scenes of high ranking officers having been locked in the boot of their own car some how.
the guy didn't age. After years and years paralyzed he is able to take on the world without any muscle desegregation. "i could mention a few more things that happen later on in the story but for fear of spoilers i wont"
It looked reasonably good. but extremely linear only 1 real choice to make in the game ( A or B )which really did not change anything.
So the amount of resources that went in to the story were minimal and were all in cut scenes. that's all fine. i enjoyed the game never the less..

But if its a RPG (especially if its not MMO so you have other humans to interact with) you HAVE to concentrate on the quests, story, side quests, and peoples back storys; has some one interacted with some one else, when would you find out about that if they had. what kind of trigger point should that be Is it a dialog prompt, do you have to stumble across evidence... you really have to think about things.
You cant just throw the story at the player at the start. tell them every ones back story. explain how each individual npc knows any other npc and their opinion of them. then just set you off down the road to shoot people..
So a LOT of the resources HAVE to go in to that. if not most of them..

Then with this game they have also changed the weapon modding system, and it looks like they spent quite a while on that too. Now that has to be linked to levels ability perk points stat points etc, a lot of time has to be spent balancing when you could make what.
The leveling system has been re made. The amount of time and effort it would take to balance something like that out is immense.
then they have to make the level designs for interior and exterior layouts. decide where some npcs live. they cant just scatter them arround willy nilly or quests wouldn't work.
Quests have to be set out so they are relatively balanced. you don't want your 1st quest to be kill a nest of death claws when you are lvl 1 with a bb gun because you would just die. Equally you don't want it to be go over there and kill 4 rad roaches because that would be boring "even though it will probably be in there as some sort of tutorial mission."

Enemy have to scale to level, and also be relatively balanced for every ones play stile.. maybe some one wants to mainly focus on luck perception and charisma they should be able to and still be able to play the game. but the people who focused on guns strength and endurance don't want to just walk through the game because of the game being to easy because of mr lucky charm glasses. So they have to spend time on that..
then you have these new build your own settlements and adaptive caravan trade routes.
All of this takes time.
that's without mentioning unique character models adaptive dialog trees and voice acting.

So fair enough it may not look as nice as some modern linear games. but your 4-6 hour long linear campaign with tacked on MP games do not compare.

In a world where games have had the awful habit of becoming blander and blingier I personally think that it is great to see Fallout 4's focus not be in the graphics, becoming a game that might as well be called Open world shooter: Another one.

Graphics are not everything, and we must also remember what the best games looked like last gen, especially ones with an open world. Skyrim was probably the best and it kinda looks crap now, so I have no problem believing that this is a game from the 8th generation of consoles.

This game doesn't just seem to be another iteration, but adds quite a lot from deep weapon modding, the ability to build your own villages and hopefully a great story and game world to boot.

Graphics are not everything!

I'm not usually this childish (oh go on then, I am sometimes) but I find this video to be well fitting of those who keep complaining about the graphics.

I really actually feel sorry for these people.

So games can only be one or the other? I'm pretty games use to have both in the past. Yes, the content might be large and good, but if the devs struggle to make graphics even average, then that says a lot about their ability and who knows what a more competent dev team might have delivered (plus it explains why their games are so darn buggy, and I'll also point out that content creation is a separate team to graphics so simply more employees would resolve this problem). I do think people give Beth way too much credit when if a new studio had done this then they would get a lot of slack.

Yea, rpgs have died a death sadly as publishers just won't fund anything. But as for content, Star Citizen looks like it will outstrip most games whilst looking the best. It can be done, you just need the publisher to front the money and give the devs time.

And the comments people are saying about "modders will fix it" - erm, why not employ them instead then? Plus why am I paying full price for a game people are saying needs polish from day one? I just don't think in any other industry such a delivery of a product would be tolerated by the customer.

Any examples to share? I can't think of another FPS RPG on this scale.

You clearly value graphics above all else and thats fine your entitled to that opinion, it is my opinion however if this team had focused more on graphics and less on content this franchise (the bethesda reboot that is, not the originals) in particular would not have been as successful as they have been, this is one of the most anticipated games of the last couple of years I think that speaks volumes to the talent of their dev team, certainly buggy but the wealth of content really supersedes those relatively minor issues

What would happen to those employees once art assets are finished? Also hiring more employees would increase cost, that increase in cost might mean other features and/or story would have to take a hit, maybe a worthwhile trade-off for some games I don't think these open world RPG's would benefit.

I do think people give Beth way too much credit when if a new studio had done this then they would get a lot of slack.
Again this is just my opinion but I think if a new studio came in tomorrow and managed to produce a title as detailed and larg as these have been they would be praised not ridiculed, whilst the graphics aren't great there more than passable to suspend my disbelief.

Whilst I partially agree in regards to the employment of modders (some have been hired maybe not by BethSoft) you are making a statement based of a subjective opinion on graphics, if you where stating that the fundemental game was terrible then I would agree however I don't think this to be the case.

The graphics vs gameplay debate is an interesting one and crops up quite often.

I'd like to have both please. After all, the graphical eye candy needs to be there to justify the expense of my twin-gpu'd beast of a pc. Otherwise I'd have a console and be getting the same experience for a lot less money.

I think graphics are important personally. Sure the gameplay is just as important but immersing yourself in the game is too, poor graphics to me help get into the virtual world. It's kinda like horrible graphics in a VR game, yeah it adds another layer of immersing the player but the horrible graphics will constantly remind you that it's just virtual. Imagine if the graphics were stunning? You'd quickly lose yourself. That's how I see it at least, everyone is different.

Well seeing that there are no other fps rpgs, I'll open it up to other rpgs :p Heck, take Oblivion. Same folks and that (for the time) was really good graphics. The detail (for that time) of the foliage was insane. Also look at the GTA's. They have had a lot to do in them and always graphically been very good. You then have Witcher and DA series. Both graphically solid with tons to do.
Now why do you jump on the graphics wagon? I just said I want both and that it shows the technical competency of a group - which is important.
Why not have both? Why do you think it is one of the other? As I stated, the guys who make graphics are a different team to those making the gameplay, objects etc. Plus it helps if the engine chosen is half decent.
Thing is, content is easy to make. Graphics are hard. That is my real concern over it all.

More costs is right, but how about the publisher stops taking a huge cut or they shave a percent off their profit margin to cover these new overheads?
As for art - good PMing would prevent one team finishing early.

Well its good you like them, but looking around at reddit and forums, not many folks do like how it looks. Thing is these guys have how many years of experience so they should be producing more. Look at how GTA has grown, or even the TW series. The jump from FO3 to FO4? Pretty limited given the time, money, and experience of the studio.

Graphics isn't subjective though. You can count polys, texture resolutions, what techniques they are using, compare the game against other games etc. It is actually 100% objective. What is subjective is how little someone wants from them and what aesthetics people are looking for.

i don't think graphics are that hard honestly. once wire frame is done its mostly down to textures...
personally i cant texture stuff. or draw to save my life. mine wouldn't turn out like this. but i imagine if they spent 10x longer on every single item in the game adding that extra little bit then it would look a lot better. (would also cost 10x more and take 10x longer)
but time is money and you dont get free artists. so if you spend to much budget on the graphical art then you take a hit some where else.
and if you lose out on story depth and quests because of people who want gfx, then all you end up with is the same eye candy mind numbing games that they churn out year after year that every one complains about but keeps geting 9.5/10 on ign or other paid for review sites.

engine development was done. people keep saying its the same engine as fallout 3 but skyrim didnt even use that. and this is an updated version of the skyrim engine (it can do more)

lighting etc is something that they have improved on. and i do think when texture packs come along it will be less of an issue. they will eventually release a high res texture package.

but fallout will always suffer from being post apocalyptic, you cant make it a beautiful lush world full of fauna and flora and portray the bleakness of your surroundings.

i do think that people have lost the plot complaining about the gfx though.. the lighting effects seem to be fine. shading seems fine. you can have standing water and surfaces reflect differently. this means its just a combination of portraying the bleakness of a post apocalyptic world combined with less than perfect textures.

none of that is an issue to me.
I have seen a few issues i may have with some of the character models when they are talking from trailer vids.
But i would rather play fallout 4 even at 640x480 with jaggies every where 256 colours than play assassins creed or call of duty.

and GTA V is a broken unplayable mess online, because they spent so much time making it look nice that they couldn't even stop the same exploit that killed GTA IV..
which seems to contradict your point entirely.

What a load of crap lol.

You could play a game with just boxes that were modeled with millions of polys and 8K textures, doesn't mean it's good..

I just dug up the Warning thread and you used a different word, I don't think 'crap' classifies as such a bad word.

Besides, we have a swearing filter now so if it was a bad word, it would've just disappeared in his post :)
