failing soundcard or motherboard ?

hi.

recently i took apart my computer to change chipset and cpu cooling and after that the soundcard refuses to work.

as soon as the drivers are loaded i get noise which cant be muted through the computer.

the card has been verified to work on a nforce2 based motherboard with a known bad reputation for this soundcard.

have the same problem in xp with both creatives drivers and custom drivers, also the same problem in vista with creative beta drivers.

i have also had problems from time to time with corecenter claiming i have an unsupported motherboard, at the same time clockgen refused to work and reported failure with an unspecified driver.

i have tried with different drivers including fresh installation of xp.

all 3 pci slots and the soundcard doesnt work in any of them but my tv-card works fine in all 3.

i even disconnected the new fan and most other fans but didnt help.

any ideas ?

starting to believe the motherboard i have is somehow screwed up.

the soundcard in question is a creative audigy2, using onboard realtek alc850 now works but doesnt sound good.

i also had the exact same problem with an audigy1 card when i built this computer 6 months ago so i thought the soundcard was broken and bought this audigy2 card which worked good when i installed it.

Sounds very wierd if all you've done is change the chipset&cpu fan.

Have you tried unplugging the cpu/chipset fans for a moment to see if that helps?
 
ye weird it is.

have no chipset fan anymore as i went ove rto passive cooling and yes tried disconnecting the cpu fan but didnt work.

all i can think off is that their is a hardware problem with the motherboard.

have had problems on and off with both corecenter and clockgen working for example.

EDIT:

im not on the latest bios but the one i have have worked quite well for several months.

going to reinstall xp and start by installing chipset drivers.

then gfx drivers and then creatives drivers.

will also make a clear cmos and run everything stock during the install.

anything i missed ?
 
XMS, tried those drivers and encountered the same problem as with creatives.

was not on a clean install of xp but used drivercleaner to erase all creatives driver.

FragTek, any ideas how the tv-card can work just fine but the soundcard doesnt if it really is the motherboard failing ?
 
Considering the sound card works just fine on every other mobo you've tried it on, what else could it be? Can't explain why the tv tuner works though, wierdness.
 
ye weird it is.

when i think off it, i installed a fan controller at the same time as i changed cooling solution so might be it but its a LOOOOONGshot as i had one earlier that worked fine but rma'd it due to the clock going offtime.

think i will use one of the 2 images i made last time i installed xp.

xp with system and gfx drivers installed which worked fine 2 times now.

any ideas ?

Is this in the PCI slot?

Can you try a different one?
 
Again, it sounds like you've mystically screwed your mobo in an unexplainable way. Never really heard of anything like it but you can't deny the fact that the card works top in what was it, 3 other rigs? That pretty much narrows down the problem right there after going through all of the troubleshooting steps that you already have.

Can you RMA the mobo?

most likely not, i can take it back to the store and let them check it but would most likely end with me paying for their time and getting the motherboard back as it basicly works but just not with the soundcard anymore.

at the moment i have no idea what i will do but have been looking on cheap motherboards but will have to wait for atleast 3-4 months.

no can do, dont have the money for another soundcard and probably wont for another 3-4 months or so :(

will ask around if any of my friends have a soundcard over but doubt it.

is it possible the chipset can be somehow overheating but only affect the soundcard and nothing else ?

i did change the cooling on it to a passive zalman nb47j but have a 92mm fan about 4-5cm from the heatsink to increase ventilation around the addin cards and around the heatsink.

according to a third party thermalsensor the heatsink is about 46c hot at the moment, have atmost been upto 58c without showing any signs of overheating.
 
think i will skip it WC Annihilius considering where you live and i live so postage will not be cheap.
 
Your onboard sound will be good enough till you get a new one. :rolleyes:

btw, I lived in Uppsala for several years. nice to see the blue and yellow waving.
 
its the onboard im using now but its only cheap realtek alc850 and it does work but not good.

the bass comes to strong in many songs and WAY to strong on my tv-card.

ooh so your from tokholm :p living on the w(b)estcoast myself ;)
