Facebook acquires Oculus VR

Having tried the oculus for the first time today (it's awesome) I think people shouldn't be so quick to shun Oculus VR. Firstly it's 2 billion fu**ing dollars!! and secondly if they can maintain their direction with facebook as an investment partner then great, more money to go into makiing Oculus the best product possible. Facebook are just doing what any sensible company would do and investing in their future due to the decline in the younger generation's adoption of facebook.

However I do think part of the make or break of Oculus will be if facebook maintains the ability for developers to really go to town with what they wanna do with the kit. It's going to be an interesting one to watch

Zuckerberg says:

Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.
But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.

That basically means he wants to get the contractual obligation to finish the plans for gaming ASAP to move on to his own ideas. Things have changed IMO.

Some might even say $2bn is cheap for the leading company in VR...

i think GasmaskbookofFace has kind of a good feel to it, for a name :p

Seriously though i probably wasn't going to think of getting one anyway with a price, but this has put a nail in the coffin for that at all now really.

But they are not partnered with facebook. They're OWNED by facebook. Oculus VR for all intents and purposes doesn't exist anymore. It's a facebook subsidiary now. Palmer Luckey will now retire with his $400m in Cash and $1.6b in worthless facebook stock and flip the bird to everyone who believed in OR or even backed their Kickstarter in the early days.

I wish I shared your optimism. The fact is, the support of the gaming community is worth more than anything FB can throw at Oculus, money-wise. Not to mention the fact that Oculus basically just took a huge shit on everyone who supported the Kickstarter. Quick, take crowd-sourced money to make a viable business then sell out!

I definitely agree with what you're saying. I just like to hold on to the fact that the guys behind oculus are gamers like you and me and can only hope they were careful when drawing up this contract that they are still working in the best interest of gamers

Dude. Let me write it out for you.
$2,000,000,000

I mean...optimism is great, but let's get real - for that money Facebook can tell them to do whatever they want to do and Oculus shall ask how high.
