Facebook acquires Oculus VR

Well at least "bad" parents now have a real excuse for not looking after their kids, "I was playing farmville and didn't notice them". I bet Zinga are rubbing their greedy mits right now.

I mean it's bad enough people spend far to long on social media as it is especially youngsters wandering around like zombies heads firmly tilted down with no idea where they are walking (idiots) but to make social media VR.... Come on!!!

Simply a waste of good tech, this will just become a form of social control (the "V" Chip).

Tbh, I don't get this comparison at all.

Google have a plan. Looking at their pattern of purchases, they clearly have a goal in mind. I'm all for that. If you can bring technologies together in an innovative way, that's only good for the world, and Google don't have the same shitty track record that FB is slinging.

Facebook are desperately trying to stay relevant. This is a "Hey guys, we need something new and cool" purchase, and I'm actually embarrassed for Oculus for sinking to it.

Wow...

Unless they announce some pretty serious reason for this that will help it, that's Occulus rift dead. If they integrate this with facebook in any way shape or form there's no way I'm purchasing it. I barely use facebook anymore as it is. This is a sad day in the history of gaming and technology indeed.

I think in reality this will provide the level of funding it needs and Carmack won't leave, but I do find the whole ordeal hilarious.

Its a comparison about a company that owns alot of things/services more then what they buy :P. Bear in mind Google have a quickly worsening track record as well, especially about personal data and how certain services such as youtube seems to be going downhill (google+ integration was just the start...).
Oh and google have bought up robotics companies and their own ideas are becoming gimmicks (google glass).

  1. Promise a generation the technology they've been dreaming about for decades.
  2. Host a successful kickstarter.
  3. Sell out.
  4. Profit!
Anyway I'm wondering how do kickstarter backers feel about this? Anyone on here backed the project?

Shouldn't bother them if they did. Oculus held up their part of the bargain. Those who pledged enough got their dev kits just like Oculus said they would.
Let's not take memes from Reddit and try and use 'em seriously on here :)

I guess that's the funny thing about kickstarer... Investors without giving away shares...
I doubt they'll be happy about it, but there's little to nothing they can do.

Just remember that Palmer always said game were just the start! look at the big picture here Joe public wants to play vr farmville or whatever those people do good for them it won't mean i will get ads in sc or il2 which is all i care about as far as i can see the only way this will affect me is that i will get a 4k display and it may just be wireless a lot faster.
So i say let joe public play their shit or go into a vr second-life all they want it will only give us a better vr experience faster with that said my initial response was like getting kicked in the stones but i have had a bit of time to calm down and think about it but only time will tell ;)

To be honest I don't think that's the big issue. Oculus was a third party piece of hardware that other people could code for if they wanted to, Facebook etc. included.
My issue is that Facebook's record with data mining is deplorable and we are likely to see features such as Facebook integration and being asked to log in to your Oculus as standard. That annoys the hell out of me.

That is what i thought as well but what can be done can also be undone for instance
say fb is hardwired into the O/R how long do you think before some 17 year old cracks it ?
I would just wait and see how it plays out not like we have a choice anyway the big money for F/B is in joe public not our type of gaming.

Love this ROFL

So disappointing. I was so looking forward to this type of technology and now, well, gah.

Lol, the dude was offered two freaking billion dollars. If people think that they wouldn't have done the same thing then sure, guess you're better than I am.
To me he owes no one anything. I'm not happy that he sold to Facebook but that doesn't mean that the people who chose (who made their own goddam choice) to pledge their money in exchange for a dev kit - which they were given - should be demanding refunds like a bunch of cry babies.
