Hows this for a cheap, dedicated F@H rig,

AMD FX-4 4100 Black Edition 4 Core 3.6Ghz £89.84

Asus M5A97 PRO 970 £78.03

Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz HyperX £17.77

Casecom K5-7688 £22.98

Corsair 430W V2 CX £34.80

XFX HD 5450 512MB £25.26

Be Quiet Shadow Rock Pro £32.99

£310

Im not fanatical about F@H (atm) I just like the idea of helping to unwrap the mysteries behind human genetics, and being part of a massive supper computer.

Any good? or could i get better for the money. Would stretch another hundred if it was worth it.

If it was me & i was going with AMD i'd bag a X6 or if it was Intel i'd grab the cheapest i5 i could, 2300/2310/2320 etc

Also i'd ditch the ATI 5450 & use a 8800GT or above

For a rig that is supposed to run 24/7 i'd look closer on power efficiency and there i'd say an i3 will give you about the same performance and price with a way better efficiency. Unless you get power for free

For a dedicated folding rig the more cores the better. Also, nVidia is the way to go for GPU folding.

yep power is free. so what would be the best platform for around £400. i have os and hdd's.

Copy my main rig but without all the peripherals and use a lower end case (1090 + Crosshair IV + cheap dual channel ram) Then just bung in a 650w PSU and add a mid range Nvidia card, perhaps a 460 or 470

Im not going to get an x6 am3+ platform rig for the money i am willing spend on it, if i was to spend more, then i would just go for 2600k setup.

my budget is around 400

For a whole system or for just the processor? If you can get an entire 1155 rig for £400 you're laughing (including graphics card)

I'd go for a 560Ti as the GPU. Gives about 13k PPD, and sells for about £180.

Did a quick scout around Aria, and came up with this (quickcodes in brackets):

ARIANET Avenger Midi Tower Gaming Chassis - £19.99 (47468)

Intel Core i3-2100 3.10GHz - £88.79 (43839)

Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3 Mobo - £79.98 (45563)

Asus GeForce GTX 560Ti DCII/2DI/1GD5 DirectCU II 1024MB - £164.99 (43564)

600W Corsair Builder Series 600CX V2 Power Supply - £54.71 (44572)

Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Blu Memory Kit CL9 1.65V - £19.58 (47167)

Total = £428.04

Pretty sure with a bit of looking around and tweaking you could get that down to £400.

Nice, thanks. is the i3 good enough or would you recommend an i5. I'm not to bothered about the money really, i just didn't want to spend 1000s on a rig I'm never going to use.

Not sure what the folding is like on either TBH. Can only suggest having a look around to see what the gain is in folding points.
