F@H GPU squeaking / screeching noise ?

Hi there, I'm absaloutly brand new to folding @ home. and I've just setup my configuration files and started folding under Team 98860 Redline @ OC3D.net (not sure how I officially join the team. And sorry if I'm not aloud to do what I've done) with my CPU and GPU at the same time (not sure if your supposed to do this). and it started making this really high pitch squeaking / screeching noise from my rig. I've narrowed it down to my GPU by running CPU on its own, then GPU on its own. I'm not entirely sure why it does this as I never hear a peep from it during GPU stress tests or any gaming I do.

Verifying a few of the things above would be greatly appreciated and maybe having a few idea's or answers on why its making noise whilst folding.

It's what most often is refured to as coil whine and is nothing to worry about... although it can be rather annoying.

As for joining the team. Just putting the teams details into the client is all thats required to join the team (as you have already done). Welcome aboard

Thanks for the reply, that's a relief to hear its nothing to worry about, right back to folding a just putting up with it.

another thing I know its kind of off topic but you may know the answer really easy. I'm running a 4.5GHz OC on my CPU (would love that on my GPU tho

) and it reports it fine in CPU-Z but in the F@H tracker it reports the default 3.4GHz

Yeah just did a 7 Min run with GPU and CPU folding. and my GPU hit 100% fan speed and 80*c. that's not acceptable in my books so currently I'm just going to leave it folding with only CPU till I get my new case the NZXT 810 Switch, the angled fans on the HDD cages should help keep the temps down for sure. well to be honest anything is better than this tiny tacky Maplins case I'm styling at the moment. hehe 1x 120mm intake and 1x 80mm exhaust. have to have the side panel off this thing or it over heats playing games.

Windows does the same of you check the computer properties. Windows checks the default max multiplyer and reports the CPU speed based off that.

Where as CPU-Z calculates the CPU speed in real time.

80c is actually fine on a GPU.

But at the end of the day you should run what you are comfortable with.

What is the threshold on these Processor's you seem to know your stuff so I'd trust you to tell me the correct info

CPU: i7 2600k (I've always been lead to believe don't let it breech 79*c)

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 580 SoC (with GFX cards I haven't got a clue I just go by the rule above)

Both the CPU and GPU will throttle themselves if they get to hot. Thats the first thing to remember. So it's actually really hard to cook them.

As a rule of thumb, sticking to 79c with the CPU seems pretty reasonable. With my 2600k I only start to think about taking action if it settles above 85c.

The GPU is actually put under quite a load while folding. The load isnt as high as furmark, but certainly higher than most if not all games. You will find that the GPU will throttle or power manage at 99c/100c. Keeping it under 90c would be my advice, but it is still safe to go over.

Hi Rohiric, I have the Gigabyte 580 SOC and it was folding at 86 - 89 C for a while with no problems. But after a nice clean up it now runs at 77 C
