Just found this article - http://www.hardwarec...next-level.html

Look's like good news for us amd folders...

Running now on my 6950 2gb (sharders unlocked to 6970) is giving me around 9350ppd, is this any good ??

I was hoping this would of been something new but sadly its the same as i posted last year

GPU & SMP is a waste of time as SMP ppd takes a serious beating

Ok if all you want to do if GPU fold but again the numbers still aint all that, my 5870 was pulling around 8.4k BUT the power my X6 & 5870 were pulling vs say my Q6600 & GTX460 doesnt make folding of anything AMD worthwhile (well unless you dont pay for leccy)

Well Stanford has been very busy with the V7 client, and most of their resources have gone into making that one work properly, and it does, loads of bugs have been fixed now. they are not quite there yet but getting there. As they only have one main coder (AFAIK) they haven't had much time to do other projects aswell. So I wouldnt write the off just yet.

but indeed progress is slow on this front

A 6790 with that PPD and maybe I'd look in to it but a 6950? No thanks.

The power draw and CPU hit is ridiculous. Why does anybody fold on AMD cards? I really don't understand it. Your power draw multplies once for every higher end card you run and your PPD decreases about 2-5k per card once you're CPU is maxed out.

Three 6950s and an FX-6100 might seem like a good folding rig, for instance, but you won't be getting 20K SMP + 9.5K + 9.5K + 9.5K = 48.5k PPD.

You'll be getting more like 4-8k + 9.5k + 9.5k + 9.5k = 32.5k-36.5k PPD @800w/h. Wheras you could get 16-24k PPD off the FX-6100 alone at <180w/h.

If you keep it at stock then you don't need a OCing board nor do you need a big heatsink and the power draw is low and you can probably buy a second system.

This is what I have done and intend to keep doing.

Just bought this:

8120

2GB 1333Mhz CL9

mATX AM3+ board + onboard graphics

250w PSU

PCI-e 1x wireless card

= ~£186

Already have a bunch of F3s to use.

Not bothering with a case.

Expecting up to 30k PPD under Lubuntu 11.10. Probably nearer 25k though @~160w/h
