External HDD shutting down computer

I am doing this from my workstation (at work) I am working on a computer and I just installed a new motherboard and installed windows 7, everything was running great. I was then going to put the users data back on the computer using a HP external HDD USB3. I plugged it into the front USB headers, the computer shut off immediatly, and will not turn back on. I tried a new PSU and still no luck. I am thinking about clearing the CMOS but I doubt that will work.

Does anyone know why something like this may have happened.

Assuming that the drive worked fine on another PC, as you've got the data on there. It does sound like some kind of power surge, from the drive that has blown something on the motherboard or corrupted the bios.

it could also be the headers on the front of the case, if they are not plugged into the motherboard correctly, it causes a short, and shuts the pc off

try a usb port around the back of the motherboard

sounds like the front panel usb shorted it out and fried it. This is why i love mobo usb's more

what case is it ???/

true they normally have all that stuff sorted out before hand. Unless the new mobo had an issue with the front panel connector solder job or along those lines. It could be a bad external as well have ya tried hooking it to another rig to see if it fries it err I mean works on another rig??? I know risky but one way to know for sure.

so this leaves a very strong possibility the mobo was defective. It may just be a coincident it went when you plugged it in. It maybe like Sheroo said an amp issue but I cant see lack of amps frying it. Making it unstable yes. check the mobno over with a glass and see if it has burnt spots or shoddy solder
