EVGA GTX 660 Issues - Help Appreciated

Hey all.

Friend of mine bought a 2nd hand EVGA GTX660 SC which arrived today. However, his PC gets the BSOD after the Windows is starting logo and will only boot windows in safe mode (no error dump files).

When he runs dxdiag, under display, the card isn't listed (no drivers I'm assuming). So, I pointed him towards some drivers in safe mode, he was able to install 320.18 (320.49 wouldn't install). On re-boot, same thing happens, blue screen and forced to boot in safe mode.

His specs are; i5 3470, Asus PH61 MX-USB3, Corsair 550W, 8gb Corsair vengeance @1600mhz.

Any idea's what's wrong?

Many thanks.

Download driver sweeper and clear the current GFX drivers and see what happens. Do you happen to know the error code you receive upon the PC BSOD'ing? That could potentially point to the root of the problem.

He built the system without the GPU and was using his PC with the on-board graphics. He installed his dedicated GPU today.

Sadly, he isn't receiving any error dump files/codes. He has disabled the onboard gpu and uninstalled it completely, still no use. He can only boot to Windows in safe mode.

Hmm cannot be the PSU (unless he didn't,plug tge power cables in properly) and I highly doubt this is a driver issue.

He may have just bought a dead card. I'd contact the seller if I was him although I seriously doubt that he would be willing to help.

Problem is now, he actually uninstalled the iGPU lol and the PC won't boot at all now (didn't think this was possible? Can it be reinstalled?)

I think the seller has sold a fried card.

Can you not put it in your computer to test?

Seems unlikely the card is buggered if it boots fine in safe mode but not in normal mode. There isn't really any reason why it would do that.

It sounds more driver related.

Do you have a spare hard drive? Put it in, and reinstall windows on that and see how it goes. That should give you an indication of whether it's drivers or not.

This whole process would be much simpler if he lived close to me but unfortunately, he lives 500 miles away (Hartlepool)

Trying to get his on-board graphics back, and try to get the 660 working from scratch.

If the PC was booting in safe mode connected via HDMi to TV directly to the GPU, surely the GPU is actually working, to a certain extent at least?

Still haven't resolved this issue for him after sleeping on the problem.

Could the GPU be under-volting? If that would be the case, how on earth do you change the voltage on a GPU you can't interact with?

Many thanks as always.

A couple of things come to mind:
1) If he resets the CMOS then I would expect the on-board video to start working again
2) Have you ensured that he has plugged in the power to the video card?

Does the fan on the card even spin up?

Can he try the card in another computer?

Yes, the fans spin fine and he can't put it in another computer sadly.

This is a difficult one, because without being there to inspect and test - I'm firing blanks trying to get it to work for him.

What I know; HDMI connection to TV brings blue screen with no error dump files - will boot in safe mode.

iGPU won't work with the GPU plugged in and display connected via VGA to a monitor.

The drivers that have been downloaded in safe mode whilst connected to HDMI will still yield a blue screen (320.49 and one older driver).

Disabling iGPU and the drivers for it has no impact at all.

I've had him manually CMOS (Battery) and we're in the process of running through the above after CMOS. If that doesn't remedy it, I'm all out of idea's and someone else's brain might be better lol.

Well, if the fans spin up and he does get an image from the GPU (even though it's just bios/blue screen/save mode) I don't think the card is dead. Or at least not completely.

Has he booted into save mode, used driver sweeper, restarted the PC and re-installed the Nvidia drivers yet?

Otherwise I'm getting a strong feeling that it has something to do with the power supply even though 550 Watt should be way more than he'd ever need with his current set-up.

Maybe it's the motherboard. Does he have a secondary PCI-E slot that he can try the card in, or even another card in his PC?
