EVGA GTX 1080 SC vs Zotac GTX 1070 TI AMP! Extreme

Hello guys!

I am very undecided about which VGA to buy since these new 1070 TI, specially this ZOTAC AMP! Extreme model, are doing so well with these OC and stuff.

I know this particular 1080 EVGA model can't be OC very well (because it's made SC by default duh!) but I want something to last for quite sometime.

The difference is not so high (like 70$) and I would love your opinion.

Thanks in advance!

For $70 the 1080 is not worth it if you're going to overclock the 1070 Ti. That said, if you're going to spend $500 on a 1070 Ti you'd honestly be better off getting a lower end 1080 because its still the faster card. The 1070 Ti only makes sense at around $460-470. With 1080's going for $515, spending $500 on some of the higher end Ti's ain't worth it.

Actually I never OCed any VGA, I don't even know if my PCU can hadle it (I have a Thermaltake Smart Series 600W). Plus, I'm a bit concerned about the eletric energy costs - the OC 1070 wont make me spend more money than the 1080 SC with the power cons.?

I quoted these models because I can't afford the higest 1080 like Asus or MSI 1080, this EVGA one is the only one which is cheap here right now and close to the 1070 TIs price.

If you are looking to keep the card a long time go for the EVGA 1080 as the warranty is better.

Even if I dont OC this model you think it can be superior on performance than the 1070 OC? I only saw here graphs with the 1080 FE but this model is a SC version with a higher clock rate.

In that case, get the 1080. It is the faster card. 1070 Ti's are great because they can overclock like crazy and give you 1080 performance but like I said earlier, that's only worth it if you can get them for around $460 or so.

Do you think my PSU can’t hold the OC? I read in the OC3D Review that the power cons. is really close to the 1080 but I dunno how these tests are made.

I am just unsure because I couldn’t find any nice reviews about this EVGA 1080 SC and the ones I read were only about how bad it could handle OC and it really could explode (literally).

The other cheap option I found was the Gygabyte Windforce 1080 but I read it was quickly traded by G1 worldwide but this is the only model I can afford also.

Kinda feels bad to get a poor 1080 in late 2017 seeing these new shiny VGAs there but if the price is so alike...

Just to share a little bit of information about my choices, here are the exact models avaliable in my country:

GTX 1070 Ti:
ZOTAC AMP! EXTREME
ASUS ROG STRIX (REGULAR)

GTX 1080 (+70 US$):
EVGA SUPERCLOCKED ACX 3.0
GIGABYTE WINDFORCE 3F OC

MY PC SPEC:
Inter Core i7 7700 KabyLake 1151 (NOT the K version, stock Cooler)
MB Asus Prime B250M-PLUS DDR4 1151
16 GB DDR4 RAM 2400MHz (8GB Patriot Viper 4 Series + 8GB HyperX 2400 Series)
1TB HD 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda (Soon to get a NVMe Corsair)
PSU Thermaltake Smart Series 600W SPD-0600P
24" 1080p 144hz 1ms AOC Hero LCD Screen

I forgot to mention that I am currently aiming for a steady 144 fps on ultra settings (Destiny 2 and other games) but I want a good PC so I can move to QHD or UHD someday.

Thanks to everyone that are taking the time to read and reply here, you guys are awesome!

What GPU are you currently using?

What GPU are you currently using?

None, the i7 one.

I had a PowerColor Red Dragon (not Devil, not Golden Dragon) RX 580 8GB but it was so bad, but so bad I had terrible FPS drops even in World of Warcraft which is a 2000 game hahah

So I am trying to do a better research, invest a bit more to build a decent PC to last for the next years and play at a 144hz or maybe 60Hz/75Hz QHD/UHD in the next year when I upgrade my monitor.

Is it only WoW that you play?

If yes, the 1070ti ior 1080 is overkill imo. You could get a 1060 leaving you with spare change to put towards the new GPUs in 2018. WoW is CPU intensive after all.

Otherwise, I really don't think you can go wrong with either. Zotac AMP! is an awesome card. and EVGA has fantastic support and a step up program for upgrading in the future.

In the end, both are on par with one another really so balls in your court. At least you have given yourself a choice between great cards as opposed to whats flooded on the market now.

Zotac also do a 1080 mini if i remember correct with is OC'd out the box. Could be worth a look.

Oh no I play lots of games too. Like I said I plan on moving to 4K soon (or 1440p if the 4k monitor keeps way overpriced here in 2018) so I want a good VGA.

I saw this ZOTAC MINI MODEL which have a very good price (almost the same price of the 1070TI) but can it surpass the EVGA SuperClocked nature being so small?

I dunno, I am afraid of burning it tying to OC such as small VGA...

ZOTAC has also a great support here in Brazil - Free RMA and support.

I didn't find any review of this card with OC and results comparing to the EVGA or Gigabyte models. That is the main issue: those cheap 1080 are the only options here (because the other one are WAY more expensive like 200US more) but you can't find good reviews because in the US/Europe they are only like 20US cheaper than the FTW, Extreme versions and its simply not worth it.

Take a look at guru3d review on the 1080ti mini from Zotac. its a damn strong one. much better than reference. I can only fathom a guess the 1080 performs just as well in its class.

I feel like I'm repeating myself but maybe I'm just not explaining it right or I don't understand what you're asking.

Your choice is between a 1080 and a 1070 Ti and you don't want to overclock, right? The Ti only makes sense if you can't really afford a 1080 because even overclocked it's still just a little slower than a 1080. If you can afford a 1080, get a 1080. An EVGA SC card is a very good one and much better than an entry level card.

1070 < 1070 Ti < 1080
EVGA Superclocked cards are very good cards with very good coolers and warranties.

Thanks Mac you made it very clear and I decided to buy the EVGA SC 1080. The difference is not big in price and I can afford it.

I just couldnt have a good response about the product since everyone goes FTW anyway.

I would like to thank everyone for your time!

Good deal, I think you'll be happy with it.

The FTW are great cards but those SC cards are also built very well with very good coolers on them and they're cheaper too and that's always a plus.

My only concern is that I read the SC series can't be OCed very much and barely reaches 2k MHz. It reaches 1900ish on a stable basis and that's it.

I was afraid of spending money and loosing performance, that is why I was thinking about the 1070 Ti series but from what I read the OC barely gives you 2-3 fps so it doesn't matter very much.

I would rather get a factory made OC VGA, with a very good 3y warranty and nice cooling and let the OC fun to the one who like to play with it.

Your basing your purchase choice on the fact you can't overclock a pre overclocked card... the EVGA 1080 SC boost to 2000 on its own, hell my 1080Ti SC2 boosts to 2075.

I suggest you do some reading into how Pascal works or just trust in GPU Boost 3 to do it's thing, if you are still insistent in overclocking you better be prepared to do a lot of back and forth benching to find the sweet spot average in clocks and voltages and you'll be very surprised and possibly disappointed to find that it was already doing the overclocking for you. You might be able to manually overclock pre OC'd AIB Pascal cards a little further but for the sake of 1 - 2 fps it is seriously not worth it.

If you're really serious about overclocking then grab a founders card, stick a water block on it and go nuts until you're happy.

The EVGA FTW cards are ok. I don't have experience with any other 1080 class cooler but the FTW is just ok in my opinion. Not the quietest or coolest but it could be worse
