European Courts rule that Employers have can read the private messages of employees

If my mum died while I was at work I'd appreciate it if someone called me rather than sending me a Whatsapp message.

That's were I differ then, Work is for work, As soon as you enter those doors you leave your personal life outside this includes your phone.

If something tragic happens I'm pretty sure people could get in touch with your workplace.

Oh no, I didn't say you should take your cell phone and call people all the time. Any workplace should at least have one central phone of which all families of employees know the phone number in case of emergency.

I was just stating that if something actually serious ever needs discussing, you're not going to do it over Whatsapp.

Completely depends where you work really. I work in an office where I have to deliver milestones/targets and as long as I do it in the agreed timeframe then it really doesn't matter if I use my phone in my downtime.
