Presumably only in work hours and whilst at work.

Of course. During the work hours in your contract your boss can tell you what to do. After that he/she has no say in what you do with your life.

Besides, I'm assuming this works much in the same way as it does when applications are blocked on your work WiFi. Except in this case they can read the messages that you send over their WiFi network.

It should mean that they can't read it if you use your own mobile data bundle. Whatsapp is all encrypted anyway so they'd have to pull the data off the Whatsapp servers which the company would never allow, and even then they wouldn't be able to read it.

Under no circumstance should you be forced to hand your phone over so they can physically read the messages off your own screen. Especially when you just happen to run into your boss while doing your groceries.

If you're on company time and resources then of course they have every right. Not really news. Although the way some people use social media to post things about work issues I'm amazed they still have a job. It's a generation thing I think. They seem to think they can do what they like.

I know I probably sound old fashioned here, but why would you be using Whatsapp? when you are supposed to be working?

In most of the jobs I worked we were not even allowed to have our mobile phones on the floor. Let alone sitting there making waffles and beans. Even if I were allowed to take my phone into work I wouldn't any way, why would I want people messing up my concentration?

It is work and you are paid to do it. Even if it's some crappy job it doesn't matter you entered a legally binding contract with your employer.

My lady and I go on holiday quite frequently to a place in Hampshire. It's like a country park with lodges absolutely in the middle of nowhere. As soon as you drive in reception ends and you pretty much have SOS on your phone.

And that's why we love it so much. A whole week or two with just us an no noises, influences or stress.

When you're waiting for things to start up or when you're on a lunch break. For me I use it as I have the most walking to do of any IT tech guy ever and it helps to break up the time.

Not that my Whatsapp currently works..

Wait, my boss can read my messages while I'm at work!? He can go to hell!......
.......Ohh wait that's me! So now I have permission to read my own messages, yay!

On a serious note, I agree with AlienALX, you're at work you should be working.

I don't know how i feel about this.
Yes whilst im at work my boss should be able to know exactly what i am doing at all times, I mean i have a work mobile, I am always on it i couldn't do my job without it. But my personal phone? I don't use this whilst im at work, i don't feel happy about that.
Say i text my mate after work saying my boss is a just because i've had a bad day or something. My boss looks at my phone the next day and see's i sent that. O.K so he doesn't have a leg to stand on legally as it was out of work hours and it is just my opinion but lets be honest, he is going to make my life hell after that. There is tons of stuff on my phone that i wouldn't want people at work to know about me, not because i'm keeping any dark secrets but its my personal life, Whats to stop them from reading whatever they like?

On the other side of the fence, can someone tell David Cameron that he works for the British public and we are all entitled to see exactly what he has on his phone?

What's preventing you from deleting the message once you send it? This doesn't give anyone the right to read the message from the recipient's device, provided that the recipient isn't also messaging from their work :D
But even then, the recipient can delete the in' thing when they read it.

Easiest thing to do is just not use any phones or messaging services in work :)

You just have to be concious when you use your phone. When I'm sitting on a project at work my phone could catch fire and IDGAF. But when I wait for the render, wait for it to print or just wait for anything else I absolutely do not find it inapproriate to have a chat with the boys.

When I worked for Easyjet phones were simply not allowed, You had to leave them in your locker or at home as we were dealing with personal information, Credit card records etc...

In general I find smartphones extremely anti-social and they are killing the art of conversation.

Unless there is a family emergency you really don't have to.

I never take my phone into work as it's a distraction and when you are in work you are their to work.

If my mum died while I was at work I'd appreciate it if someone called me rather than sending me a Whatsapp message.
