Ethernet Cables, Cat6

I'm doing a bit of forward reseach, and this could very well be a pointless thread depending on the cable type and length that comes with VM's New Super Hub....

I see a lot of varying cat6 cables, both in a variety of lengths, colours and more importantly price.

Is there any difference between? From what I see, the cables are practically identical, all bar the brand....

One last thing......
Ethernet Coupler - would these make a performance hit?
(1m cable - Coupler - 1m cable) or a straight 2m cable ?

Ethernet cables are cat6

Easier to just get a single cable. Less hassle.

Both are Black, Snagless, 10m and cat6........but £10 diff in price....

The difference is mainly in the shielding and in the quality. Depending on use case it can make sense to use a better cable with better shielding.

Cat5e cables are generally sufficient, cat6 and especially cat7 are intended to be used in environments where shielding is necessary, such as running network cables near power cables.

Both Cat5e and Cat6 support gigabit ethernet, with maximum cable length of 100m.

It all depends on the use. You have CAT6a which can provide 10gb speeds, then you have plenum rated cable which goes in the plenum space in the ceiling, and so on. The coupler will not make a difference unless it is installed incorrectly. Then you have to decide if you want straight through, crossover, etc. You can buy a cable testing kit for a few thousand if you have the money lol.

I do this for a living lol.

Who knows, we made one back in college, worked out well but I never used it. Probably created a power activated bomb.
