Enterprise drive.

Hey guys! I have a question for you all today. Someone I know is selling 4 Western Digital VelociRaptor 300 gig enterprise drives for $200 (in total). Now, that is very cheap. I am interested in buying them but I honestly don't know how well enterprise drives will perform in a desktop environment. I would assume that they are compatible but I don't know if there are any hoops I would have to jump through to get proper performance from them.

Thanks for any information you guys have!

It's still just a mechanical hard drive. It spins faster and runs warmer than regular consumer hard drives. Although I haven't used one before, I'm pretty sure you could just use it as any regular hard drive. It would probably be great as the OS drive.

50 bucks each is a steal

although, i would seriously consider checking the disks out for damage... bundles of FOUR would suggest to me that these were in a RAID array.

raptors tend to deterriate over time AND even though they are fast.... they are REALLY NOISY and get very hot

Totally agree with you. In the long run I would probably go for an inexpensive SSD like the Kingston V100 64GB for the OS and a WD 1TB Green for storage instead of having the Velociraptors. I wouldn't mind sacrificing the space and speed for something that's quiet and cool.

UPDATE: I decided to buy them. He has only had them for about 3 months now and is upgrading to an SSD raid array. I figure its a gamble. For $200 I will either be super happy with the performance and not mind the noise, or I will be out $200. Also I didn't add this in the original post, but they are going to be used as my gaming raid, I actually already have an SSD for OS.

But anyway. Thanks everyone for the information on the drives! I knew they would be loud, and a bit warm but at least I am expecting it more now. Now lets hope I didn't make the wrong choice.
