Elite: Dangerous will no longer support an offline mode

There's a post up on facebook, and people are just crying about being bothered by other people.. They clearly aren't reading what's actually happening at all.

You have to have a connection to log in and so the galaxy updates.. that's it. If you want to buzz off on your own and never be bothered by anyone ever again, that's called SOLO mode.. It's not a difficult concept is it?

Is it?!

may be some of those complaining are the people who wanted a free version, and if everything is online that's not going to happen just a thought :)

There's absolutely no reason to complain about online only mode anymore. When was the last time anyone on here didn't have a connection for more than a few hours and it's not like the connection speed is bad in rural areas either. Every village has 16mbit these days.
Those are the same tinfoil hat people who don't use steam because of its DRM and because 'you don't really own the games'. Ridiculous, it's not 2005 anymore.

For a lot of the world, internet is still patchy at best. 25 minutes from an Australian state capital city and the only choice for some is mobile or satelite internet and the cost per mb is astronomical thanks to the telcos.
Playing World of Tanks and have 150-300ms ping because we don't have local servers. Most I can sustain is a 1.2mb/s download speed which is really quite good for here.

In other words we wish we were in your 2005 :).

I bought Wolfenstein New Order on dvd as I couldn't justify (or more likely wait for) the 50gb download. Then get stung because only approx 25gb is on the discs and you have to download the rest through Steam anyways. It's a non issue in countries with appropriate infrastructure. Sounds like most of the hurt is coming from outside the 16mbit villages.

I can certainly understand the annoyance from that perspective.
At worst - for someone in similar circumstances - this is an inconvenience but it's not a game changer.
And yes I bought the digital download ;)

FFS,
How stupid are people.

I think they should change the offline mode.. have it so like you can play alone but interact with others and what you do still effects the galaxy, like you know? Like it would be cool if like single player mode allowed to do more than just be alone like still do stuff that does stuff to someone else.... Then they wouldn't have to like you know get rid of the offline mode.....

This game still has solo mode though, the only reason for why you have to be online is the persistence of the universe. That doesn't take a whole lot of bandwidth.
Also my condolences to you, i bet you must have been upset when the australian government canceled the fiber plans.

You just explained pretty much EXACTLY what Solo mode is dude

I can understand people being upset about it as it was one of their selling points, but there are 2 things with kickstarter, the first being that the moment you drop money into a project you should consider it as being a gamble for you, Second thing is that everything can be subject to change.

I get the upset mob though, the timing of this news just after a release date had been set is a bit of a dick move, but i think most people can live with it.

People seem to forget if you kickstart something, it's an INVESTMENT, not a PURCHASE.
