E7200

Hello,i just upgraded from a pentium d 925 to a E7200.I had heard great things about its OC capabilities.I ran my pentium d stable for about 2 years at 3.6ghz.But now with my E7200 i cant even hit 3ghz.The only way to get around this was to not lock my pci e frequency at 100mhz but let it auto go up with my FSB.

So now im running at 3.18ghz 9.5 multiplier and 333mhz fsb with my pcie frequency at 115.This messed up my card...i guessed it was being overclocked from the extra 15mhz...so i oc'd the gpu down..and ran tests to try and mimick the fps i remember having at my usual overclock,i got it working...but its still weird...ie 300 or above fsb and my computer wont start,299 is fine...but not 300.I was maybe thinking my PSU...but the pentium D was a power eater compared to this chip, and i never had any problems with that...thoughts? cheap motherboard may also be culprit, but its done me fine so far.

Thankyou

Have you upped the volts on the CPU at all?

You really shouldn't be limited at that speed, maybe you have a really bad overclocking batch. I don't know to be honest with you as my barrier is around 430MHz x8 on my CPU, I can't get it further even when pushing 1.6v through it, so I have given up for now.. maybe when the weather is a bit cooler I will give it another go but I am not too sure to be honest with you.

Try upping your volts to say.. 1.4v and then see if you can boot at 333MHz with a locked PCIe frequency of 100MHz, don't push it higher.. noone sees the benifits and people fry their cards that way. Most people get 1 - 2MHz extra out of it which really.. isn't worth it IMO!

What motherboard do you have in there? What chipset are you running on?

Asrock Conroe 1333-D667 like i said...a cheapy, but it let me overclock more with the pentium D.It doesnt have a voltage core setting in the bios, which is a shame...i was going to manually do it,but id rather that be my last option.I heard people can get 3.1 3.4ghz without upping voltage.Oh and my temps are 33c idle and about 43c under full load.

Well im stable at 3.17ghz with pci e at 114mhz...ram at 555 15 timings...crap i dont have core voltage changer..right now im at around 1.17/1.18v.I had to clock my 9600gt back to 660mhz core 1000mhz memory.Got nice fps in furmark test...pain trying to stop artifacting,i ran only for 30mins,ill do an all night test, but i think its stable...So im sorted! not noticed instability either which was one of the things i heard about increasing pci e frequency.

Thanks

hello sorry for late reply, you were right it did becoome unstable,im running xp and ubuntu partition...it was fine on xp because i could set my 9600gt fan to 100%...but not on ubuntu,no software supports 9600gt yet, so it froze alot of the time just randomly...my temps were fine...Anyway i did order a new MB a Gigabyte GA-73VM-S2 its till a cheap one...but im not aiming for 4ghz or anything like that...3.4 without changing the pci e frequency and ill be happy, the vcc adjustment etc should come in handy. If it still doesnt overclock well i ordered a conductive pen so i can mod the actual cpu.But from what i read its a good motherboard for modest overclocks.

Oh and this completely off topic, but i be searching and...how long will 9600gt last me? i hate how i need to update hardware instead of companies optimising, like they do with consoles...nvidia and ATi wanting to sell more cards and price fixing probably...anyway i was wondering if i should upgrade to HD4870 by the end of the year? or are nvidia bringing out something to battle against it? I only play 1280X1024 though usually...maybe be getting monitor and 1600X1200 soon...but not sure.9600gt playis crysis fine though with optimised config.

Cheers

I have problems running Crysis on high detail on my card.. so I would think you need to get a higher spec graphics card. I haven't tried overclocking my graphics yet because I don't have a good cooler. I wish I had £30.. WCUK have a special deal on.. my full block cooler is only £30! DAMN!:(

I will get watercooling.. and if the price is good I will get a water block for my graphics card too and keep it overclocked :)

Sorry went completely off topic there but any ways :)

yes...i was thinking of building a really cheap build overclocking it like a mofo and submerging in mineral oil...but i saw video...and it looked too messy...i hear you can use vegetable oil too if your ona *serious* budget..anyhoo you have any experience with that MB...know if i could get to 3.4ghz? right now im running stock 266fsb and im around 1.6/1.9v.As for grahics...i may just wait until summer 2009 before upgrading...but like i said...i wish pc game companies would optimise games instead of making deals with nvidia that only the newesst nvidia card can run it....

1.6/1.9v on what?

I am not sure, I am not a mATX motherboard fan. I have always opted for the full ATX motherboards as they offer a lot more for your money :)

As far as the pin mod is concered, it is better to get a a very thin cable and pin mod the back of the motherboard, the conductive pens are never the best option. Make sure you have a very fine soldering ion to make sure that you don't solder multiple pins together.

1.6/1.9v on cpu core,as for graphics...i can play crysis fine on very high optimised...at around 26 to 32 fps...what resolution you play at and do you optimise config file? my 9600gt OC'd to 760mhz core 1970mhz shader and 2150 mhz memory. As for MB i know its not the bst...but i only want 3,4ghz and i be happy..which i SHOULD be able to get on stock volts.

lol...someone feels like an idiot... 1.16/1.19...sorry forgot the 1...i heard 1.35v/1.4volts was the safest you could go on 45's.

1.38 to be precise. If you go above that you're seriously risking overvolting your CPU though I have overvolted mine to try and boot up and it is fine.. these Intel CPUs are tough to break.. Although it was only a short period of time (to get it to boot) I seriously wouldn't recommend you do it!

Hopefully I am going to be able to boot up at like 3.5 - 3.6GHz on this CPU once I've lapped it. That would mean a... 119% to 125% OC :)

Ok recieved MB,i upped the FSB as soon as installed to 333mhz FSB so now im sitting at 3.16ghz.Ran prime 95.My cpu idles at 30c and my cores are, first core 40c and 2nd core 35c...this seems high,,,should the cores be higher than the cpu? im using speedfan to measure.I would post screenshots but im a noob and dont have 15 posts yet...i can take it to 340mhz fsb...but then i get BSOD's within an hour on windows...some page file error thing....im thinking its my ram holding me back.i set it to 55515 like my manufacturer says, but there another setting in bios thats either auto 1 or 2...the cycles or something...i cant find this about my ram,is that the problem?

Very nice, I am guessing that you can now unlink the PCIe Frequency from the FSB frequency? :D

Right, download CoreTemp and use that to monitor your temperatures, a much better one :)

Nahh it isn't high at all, these CPUs can take up to 72C SAFELY before any worries.. clock away buddy :) Aim for high :D

Well there isnt actually any options for the pcie frequency even in hidden ctrl F1.But usually i would have to clock back my graphics card if the pcie frequency was upped,or it would lock up with anything graphic intensive, artifacts etc But my normal OC for my 9600gt is working fine...ran furmark for 3 hours with no artifacting, graphics cards are strange though...if i up the shader clock by 1mhz from where it is now,it artifacts in about a minute with furmark...but take it back down 1mhz and its rock stable...Anyway cant complain.

Cheers
