Dropped external HDD

So my foot got caught on an external HDD USB cable the other day and the drive took quite a knock when it hit the floor (sad times) I just tried using it and it makes some horrible noises, windows recognises it's still plugged in, and I can get files off of it, but now I cannot transfer anything on to it. Worst of all, it's my fiancees hard drive that gets loaned to her from her university for the duration of her course! Any ideas?

It's one of these: LINKY LINK

I would rather not have to buy a new one as I don't have any monies at the moment, but if it's buggered then I suppose I will :/ Also, I don't have anywhere to put transfer the files to as my laptop is almost full, desktop is almost full, and this things got aroun 900GB of files that I would like to keep.

You'll have to find somewhere to move the files too and after that I would probably tell the University it "just broke". I did the same with one of my externals last year but was not able to get any of the data off of it. Just sent it back through warranty.

Ok, will have to find something that I can move them to then, gonna be a pain in the ass as I can't access my music folder

I'm not sure if I can get anything off it now, it doesn't seem to want to copy anything. I can watch films from it though which is strange. Hoping I haven't lost all my pictures too.

Some folders seem OK, but some don't want to play ball, mainly the music ones and some photo ones. VERY annoying.

I was thinking you were very lucky to still be able to read even when you can't write. Aim for the important things first. If you get stuck when you could either pay for professional recovery or just take the kick in the teeth.

As I said, I had the same thing and lost everything on the drive. Luckily, I'd just backed the thing up onto my storage server.

Good luck with it mate!

I've just pulled it apart and stuck it into my desktop, got it running a disk check and hoping it might fix some errors. If it does it's a win, if not, then I'm hoping I can at least get all my films off it. otherwise it's back to square one and starting all over again! Thanks for your help though.
