Hey, as you can guess I'm new to Linux. I've managed to install the flash player on my own :p but I deffo need more practise. I'm on Ubuntu 7.10 (newest) and was wondering on a few things.

I've been told I dont need an antivirus on Linux - Is this right? I cant seem to get NOD32 install anyway (dont know which type to get)

What are the must-get apps? For performance (defragger etc.) through to visual nice-ness?

Cheers :D

Lovin it so far

edit: Creative x fi drivers? Probably need to use my onboard heh

Does the same spyware crap apply?

What other apps/mods do you recommend? I'm trying to build my ubuntu up! :)

Looking a bit plain atm

pfft probably tracking cookies, that`s probably it. And I bet u can get u`r browser to deal with that. Similarly pop-up stuff I spose.

I got adblock plus installed now, that shud sort that (overclock3d.net ads allowed)

would anyone mind listing their most commonly used/most helpful apps they have installed? Isnt Amarok supposed to be good?

i dont have any antivirus, antispyware, or anything on it

as for a must get app, get amarok

and konqruer (spelt somthing like that, its an alternative to firefox)

Well ive themed it

Changed background

Installed Amarok

I love my firefox tho :( lol

I get some weird artifacting in the bottom right of screen tho - it goes if i ctrl alt f6 or ctrl alt backspace

one thing i did to my linux that made it look cool

i changed the top and bottom bars to opaque, right click, properties or somthing, then change it to block colour, and make it 100% opaque...

then in the top bar, add graph's for cpu, ram, hard drive, network etc, and set them to update every 50ms, then you get loads of cool looking graphs that sprall across the top, and it looks really quite awsome, looks so geeky :p

I think you should be alright without any. Theres not enough stupid people running linux for hackers/idiots to go after.
