Do you think it's worth changing?

Like the title says guys I'm just looking for your opinions/experiences on whether it's worth my while to change my setup.

Atm I can get a pretty amazing deal from Aria and after selling my current parts it will only be costing my about £75 - £100 to make the switch, but I'm not sure if the overall performance gains are worth the money.

I am a heavy fps gamer, and do no video/photo editing, and I will only ever run 2 graphics cards (add another 570) or a single 590 if it turns out to be what most of us are hoping it'll be.

The parts I would be considering switching out are:

Rampage III Extreme for a Gigabyte UD7 P67 B3

i7 950 @ 4Ghz for an i5 2500k @ 4.6Ghz

6Gb Dominator Gt 1866 for 8Gb Mushkin Ridgeback 1866

All opinions and suggestions will be gladly recieved

I don't think you will see much of a performance increase TBH, apart from adding an extra 570 or a single 590 that is. The 2gb extra RAM won't give you any performance gain it will just allow you to do more or bigger Video/Photo editing projects at once.

Hmm, depends if you need/want to do it. I'm guessing you won't see much of an increase (guessing), what SieB said is also valid. £100 is also (pretty) cheap for making the switch to SB seeing as that is the way forward. I'd say if you have the money go for it seeing as the i5 2500k is better than the i7 950 overall, even if it is minor.

I don't you will see any increase at all. Especially since you are a gamer. The 950 is not holding anything back, neither will be the memory or the mainboard. 1366 is still amazing, because it has features that SandyBridge doesn't have. For example, triple channel memory, 2 graphics card x16 lanes support and more. I would suggest you stay on X58 and maybe add another graphics card, or change your later down the line.

As always thanks for the fast replies

I think its just the draw of shiny new parts and the killer deal that had me interested in the change, but you've all persuaded me its not worth it and to stay with x58 until Ivybridge comes out at the end of the year. I'll maybe just step up next week and throw in a 590 or something.

Thanks again guys

Even when Ivybridge comes out, I would still say stay with x58. Honestly in modern games it's the GPU that does all the work, your i7 950 will last you quite a while. So just saving up the GTX 590 or a second GTX 570, but when it comes to changing CPUs with your current i7 950, it should last you quite a while, so don't bother upgrading it, it will be a waste of money.

i wondered about the same thing but have decided to wait till socket 2011 is out, as i don't think the money is worth the performance increase just yet
