do i even need this gpu

I have done a lot of threads recently about getting the 290 but I just realized one thing. my monitor. Should I really get this gpu if im going to be playing in 1080p or should I get a lower end card bearing in mind I will crossfire whatever card I get next year or I might just buy a 1440p monitor.
What would you guys recommend me doing:):)

Two lower end cards in crossfire would be a waste anyway as one lower end card (lets say a 280x) runs everything very well at 1080p.

Thats a very difficult question to answer, obviously you don't 'need' any GPU at all it's not exactly a human right. It's simply something that you want and desire is a difficult thing to justify objectively.

People play at 1080p with far less hardware and i'm sure other people have far more, as we all know you can't have too much overkill! I personally have two 780's running a 1440p panel and if you try really hard with the eye candy in certain games you can hold them back. While on other easy running games like Grid or Dirt say just one 780 will achieve way over 60fps max settings @1440p. But when I buy any hardware, aesthetics, quality, noise levels and block compatibility are considered over shear price/performance as well as brand loyalty, another one of those irrational factors.

Now the big point to consider for yourself is are you actually buying for 1080p or 1440p. If it's 1440p you'd be far better off starting with a 780Ti or 290x rather than ending up with two 770's or 280x's in a years time when they are obsolete and worse performing by comparison. If your buying for 1080p however looking slightly lower down might be a good idea, you can always upgrade again in the future. What do you currently have? Is it liveable with for a bit longer until you decide to go either way?

I understand that your just looking for a bit of practical advice but most of the people with experience of high end hardware I bet rarely end up taking the most sensible route. Don't get stuck in a constant upgrade loop, unless you want to, depends if your a gamer or a hardware nut at the end of the day.

What I do, I upgrade my gpu when its struggles at keeping things smooth in mid to high detail,, and I normally buy a £200 gpu every 3-5yrs. My HD 6950 is just starting to struggle but would last me another 1-2 yrs(had it for 4yrs now), but I am going to treat myself and upgrade it sooner then I need too and buy a 290 in the next few days(should really buy a 280x tho, but hey, it will last me even longer).

Get a R9 290x they are pretty good cost : performance and because you went top end when the next series of GPUs are released you'll pick one or two or three up cheap X-Fire then and you'll still have a system that would keep up with the newer cards.

ive just got a msi r9 290 gaming after rocking a 7950 since they came out I can see a big boost in fps but they are much hotter cards then im used to so it mite be something to think about if you have a case that's not so good for air flow im going to water cool mine I can not put up with all the heat dumped in my case
