Divest or get banned! Biden signs US TikTok ban into law

TikTok has enabled a lot of the lunacy we've seen throughout the west in the last few years, The whole thing should be shutdown.

It's a Chinese Government owned piece of spyware.

I don't use it, never have, never will, frankly it's full of brain rot videos designed to make you stupid and lower your attention span.

I will be happy if it gets banned in America as then this Country can follow suit and ban it!

Lol thats hilarious. The rest I agree, but cmon... this comment alone puts you into the paranoid pool of dimwits. Facebook/Google/Twitter etc etc leak far more information than tiktok

The issue not normal america but "stupid america" (yes im stereotyping to make a point), the people that believe everything they see on social media, as the reason for society collapse.

Yes its the almost the same the world over, but its sad that America influences the world in a far more detrimental way than any other country.

If you want sanity returned... the entire social media network needs to be brought to heel. Not just tik tok.

X and facebook are responsible for such stupidity involving fake news that I honestly wonder if there are trolls somewhere making it up not for a hidden agenda, but simply to see who is dumb enough to take the bait. And sadly.. this tik tok spyware paranoia just proves the point.

If people of power are stupid enough to have social media apps of ANY kind on their phone while in the presence of other persons of power during confidential meetings and the likes.. you deserve everything that comes in regards to leaked information.

Law won't matter. They can fight it all they want, they will just force apple and Google app stores to get rid of certain social media platforms.

About damn time. Let's focus on the rest of the POS social media apps.

TikTok admitted to spying on Journalist using the app to find leakers.

From The Guardian

TikTok has admitted that it used its own app to spy on reporters as part of an attempt to track down the journalists’ sources, according to an internal email.

There are more stories as well, but anything software or hardware linked with the Chinese Government more than likely has something in it, that will allow them to take all the information from your phone or other devices and send it back to them.

Yes others do "leak" information as well, but I cannot remember hearing about Fakebook and it's other companies or Twitter being used to track people down and then use the microphone etc on the devices to listen to conversations like TikTok has done!

Happy to be corrected if there is stories about that, but personally I have not seen any.

As it is I wish all phones, tablets, computers etc all did not come with Fakebook and all the rest preinstalled but the phone companies are not going to stop installing them, because they get paid to much to install them.

One day TikTok maybe gone, but something else will pop up in it's place, then the brain rot can start all over again.

yep having all these apps pre installed is a major issue.

But that info about using IP address to track employees, every single app does that. Google does that and sends me football team info depending on where I am in Norway. its not listening to my conversations. Its just tracking my location. Which im 99% sure I gave it permission to.

Thats passive spying at its greatest. There is no mention in that article of "recording or listening" to conversations. Only Geo tracking which... every single app does.

Your average voice-over-internet call takes something like 24 kbps one way, which amounts to about 3 kBs of data per second. Assume you've got your phone on half the day, that's about 130 MBs per day, per user. There are around 150 million daily active users in the US, so that's about 20 petabytes per day, just in the US. To put that in perspective, Facebook's entire data storage is 'only' about 300 petabytes, with a daily ingestion rate of about 600 terabytes.”

I would be more concerned with the constant backdoors found in Skype than tik tok. There is still zero evidence that Tik tok has been spying on US. And that comes from US Intelligence

Im not defending tik tok. Im just tired of reading about online paranoia and hysteria. It reminds me akin to something out of Rick and Morty. Everything about this fiasco is pure hypothetical and "potential" fear.

I liked this comment in the article

“The problem with TikTok isn’t related to their ownership; it’s a problem of surveillance capitalism and it’s true of all social media companies,” computer security expert Bruce Schneier told The Intercept. “In 2016 Russia did this with Facebook and they didn’t have to own Facebook — they just bought ads like everybody else.”

I find this hard to believe. Only 300PB? As someone who has been inside an actual Facebook Data Center I call BS. It's much much more.

As for the other things being said. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. As an American, I can tell you we are extremely tired of the surveillance. Ever since the Patriot Act went into law, without any voting by the people mind you, we have been watched by big brother. Any and all steps towards removing big brother/entity is a step in the right direction, regardless of foreign or domestic.

I reckon it is all about money and nothing else.

Money and control, I agree.

Facebook Statistics on Data and Usage
Facebook generates 4 petabytes of data per day—that’s a million gigabytes. All that data is stored in what is known as the Hive, which contains about 300 petabytes of data. This enormous amount of content generation is without a doubt connected to the fact that Facebook users spend more time on the site than users spend on any other social network, putting in about an hour a day. If you’re not sure if you’re an above-average Facebook user, you can now take advantage of the site’s tool “Your Time on Facebook” to figure out, you guessed it, how much time you spend on the site.
I pulled it from this site. But its also quoted as the same on several. This was as of Sep 2023

https://kinsta.com/blog/facebook-st...es 4 petabytes of,about 300 petabytes of data.

If you think you are being under surveillance try living in the UK. No country has more cameras on the streets than UK and London in particular.

4PB a day at only 300PB Total capacity isn't nearly enough. Heck back in 2009 they were adding 2PB daily(uncompressed to be fair, pulled this from Facebook themselves).

I can't say to much under NDA I can say however being inside a Data Center, I won't confirm the amount that specific location could store but I will say 300PB is definitely a random number somebody made up.

Add on the fact Meta currently is building I believe 4 new Data Centers of which 1 I have been to is being expanded.

I would argue China has more surveillance. Not that it matters. Really the US is advanced enough and has been doing it since 2001 that they don't need as many cameras. They can just find your digital trace and find everything that way. It's been integrated as the Internet grew. Point is it's a problem and downplaying it seems rather odd. There should be no tracking of any kind. Apps don't need everything about you. Neither do governments. People globally should not tolerate it.

The USA don't like it when other countries come onto their turf and make serious money. I reckon all of the other stuff is just the govt abusing the Patriot act that was put in after 9/11 that allowed them to spy on pretty much anything and will use it to their advantage to either take over TT or cancel it and put the money back into the hands of YT. Which I also think has some involvement in this.
