Display and driver problem

Hey guys, i have an nvidia 9600 gso and in the last couple o' days i've been bumping into this issue where i'm playing a game and all of a sudden everything freezes, the sound starts looping and some of the colors go pink or green (like an old nintendo game would crash).

At first a simple restart solved the problem, later, after restarting the video driver got messed up and somehow i managed to reinstall it back and now i can't install the driver and i see a lot of flickering stripes on my screen. Also i can't access nvidia control panel cuz it says i'm not using a display attached to an nvidia gpu.

I tried to uninstall/reinstall the driver quite a few times but haven't solved much.

You have any ideea what this might be?

Thnx

First of all when you uninstalled the driver did you use a driver cleaner after the uninstal restart?

But in all honesty it sounds like the GPU is failing and will probably need RMA'ing (initial gut instinct)

Hm hm, well, good thing i don't have to tinker with it any more; bad news is i have to wait like a week till i find some time to go to the store to ask about warranty. But i don't get it, i had a pretty old busted ass computer before and the video card never gave any problems, do these newer models have such a short life span? :-/

Compared to some other products electronics vary greatly in reliability. I have been pretty lucky not to get any failed hardware for years (minus a possible PSU). Just because one goes out doesn't mean the overall quality of hardware is going down the drain. It just means you got a lemon that didn't show up until a later date. It happens.

what make is the GPU?

was the PC pre built or did you build it

This one is nvidia 9600 gso (768 mb), the old one was ati radeon 9550 (128 mb).

I didn't say that, i was just wondering if it's supposed to be like this or it was a more or less isolated case :) .

Don't know, lemme see the bill :-?

...

Says here nvidia expertvision gf 9600g.

Is this it?

Ow, yeah, and the computer is built by me not preconfigured.

ok then,i guess you have had the card for a while,so you need to RMA it back to expertvision

and i think expertvision is part owned by XFX but ime not sure.RMA it back to expertvision fella

well you get a warrenty from the dealer anyway the warrenty depends on the brand.

i think if its been longer than 12mnths you go expertvision.

just contact them and see what they say, they will give you a RMA number them you post it to them, and hopefully your turnaround should be about 10days but can be longer or shorter

Yeah I'm with Tom on this one. Classic signs tbh. My 280 started doing that in games only. When I returned to the desktop it looked like I was warping through a starfield. Reboot cured it for a while but eventually I would have to turn the PC on and leave it running on pause break for ages for the card to warm up before I could get into Windows. Then it would boot right up until the driver was loaded and just bomb and eventually it totally died.

Yeah :-/ ; and those f*****s from the hardware store didn't want to change my craphic card (i went today at 'em), they said that only if i'm in warranty they'll change it, and it's not :( so i'm only left with changing my graphic card.

But why does this happen? That guy today said that it's from the high temperature changes; he said that i need better cooling inside my computer but how do i do that? I mean, aren't there 3 fans overall in my computer(supply, processor, video card)? Can i get more fans in the computer? Should i change these ones? Should i get a different case? How do you manage the temperature inside the computer? (sorry for my noobness :D )

TBH and please remember that this is just my opinion on the matter ; Nvidia have been in trouble for a while. My 9800GT which was a lowish end card idled and maxed at quite serious levels of heat. Looking around me I see that even the 8800GTX idles WAY higher than my Radeons even max at.

This all began with the launch of the 8 series GPUs. It was early in the day then and people just didn't realise the impact these new fangled temps would have on their hardware. In the summertime my 280 idled at 70c. I had a 120mm fan right in front of it but the problem was just everything. There was no way I could feed it cool air as I just didn't have any. At times it would idle nearer 80c. That's just mental. In the end it died which came as absolutely no surprise tbh. Instead of realising this and making sure that their new GPUs ran far cooler Nvidia have just gone on to make hotter bleeding cards. Again it's too early in the day to say how they will pan out over time but with my electronics experience I am absolutely certain that they will fail. It's not a matter of if really more of when. And I would also bet my bum that they will last just over the warranty period and then die.

Also remember that Nvidia released a driver a while back that messed up the fan. I strongly suspect that this was what caused the death of my 280 tbh. Of course there is no way of proving that and I only found out about it recently and by that time I had already sent it back and got screwed on the replacement. I was out of pocket £65.

Which to me is absolutely unforgivable. A company of such stature and magnitude should JUST NOT make mistakes like that. But it's not just that it's everything with Nvidia right now. Even that silly mistake on their SLI chart that I posted today. They're clearly losing their grip.

And isn't there anything that can be done, i mean now i'm thinking of buying a forsa nvidia 9500gt 1 gb ddram2 will it die the same in a year or 2? Can i do anything to prevent it's failure? What's the highest temperature variation it should take, like minimum and maximum?

[Edit]

Again, sorry for my noobness :D .

what case do you have? I edited your post btw because of the bad language.

I don't know :-/ , some big, squary thing with a fan attached on the left side.

I just got my video card today, asus nvidia 9500gt 1gb ddr2 128-bits, but crappy thing is my fps dropped comparred to my old card :D , is it supposed to do that? As in 9500 is that worse compared to 9600?

Now all i need to get is a power supply and cooler xD.

Red = ATI. I decided to write a little song for you. Oh OK, I stole it and replaced all the words with RED but hey, it still makes a lot of sense and is funny.

(Go RED) Life is peaceful there

(Go RED) In the open air

(Go RED) Because GREEN is too hot

(Go RED) Nvidia are in the plop

(Go RED) Sun in wintertime

(Go RED) We will do just fine

(Go RED) Where the skies are blue

(Go RED) Low temps are really good for you

Repeat to fade.
