During last nights Windows 10 Live event, possibly one of the most exciting announcements was that of DirectX 12. Microsoft's Phil Spencer teased us with the news that DirectX 12 will reduce power consumption by up to 50% which will allow mid-range mobile devices to run high-end graphically and processor intensive games.

In addition, Phil Spencer also shared with us that Unity has adopted the use of DirectX 12 which will allow games such as the upcoming Fable Legends to use DirectX 12 with cross-platform play, and the new streaming feature between devices.

Futuremark who make the visually stunning benchmarks to test the performance of our computer systems had this to say "Games make thousands of draw calls per frame, but each one creates performance-limiting overhead for the CPU. API's with less overhead can handle more draw calls and produce richer visuals. The 3DMark API Overhead feature test is the world’s first independent test for comparing the performance of DirectX 12, Mantle, and DirectX 11. See how many draw calls your PC can handle with each API before the frame rate drops below 30 fps.”

Futuremark have announced that they will soon be releasing a version of their 3DMark benchmarking software that will include tests for “API Overhead” and this will test both DX11, DX12 as well as Mantle to see how they stack up on your hardware. The demo shown at Microsoft's Windows 10 briefing to show off the power of DX12 on Windows 10, was in fact this 3DMark benchmark.

What are your thoughts on DirectX 12, are you looking forward to trying it in Windows 10? Let us know in the comments below.

3DMark API Overhead benchmark ?
I bet it's going to ba a "CPU Benchmark" part for the new version of 3DMark :P
DK if it's the ONLY part of CPU Tests tho ;)

As for DX12 :
If it gives me AC:U/Far Cry 4/Shadow of Mordor at the same level of performance/graphics quality, in up to 50% slower PC, I will become "a beliver" in PR.

Won't ever happen. It does not scale linearly between hardware, hell hardware itself in the same architecture doesn't even scale that linearly simply because while the backbone may be the same the core itself has differences. Don't look into it so much. Only way you can test this is run DX11 on one PC then run DX12 on that same rig right after and compare.

Really cool benchmark they are making though.. only one in the world probably that has the DX11/12/Mantle all in one

Where does he mention changing hardware lol?

He said in a 50% slower PC.. Which gives off the assumption of a slower pc compared to his.

Even if he did or didn't it does not matter. It still won't scale from changing hardware.. it's only estimates of using the same hardware and their gains in switching APIs.

Ah I see, I read it as this:
If it gives me AC:U/Far Cry 4/Shadow of Mordor at the same level of performance/graphics quality, in up to 50%, I will become "a beliver" in PR.

As in 50% improvement on the same hardware.

@NeverBackDown
Well, They said "up to 50% increase in performace" - DX12 vs. DX11, didn't they ?
They didn't said on what hardware, so why it can't/won't apply to lower perfomance PC's/GPU's ?
^That's what I meant ie. slower GPU's will get 50% bonus in DX12 compared to DX11.
But... what made U think I meant "My rig" ?
Well, regardless.

"Up to 50%" performance increase is massive !
50% = some mid-end future cards in DX12 mode, can be as fast as today's fastest in DX11.
And when that comes true - real requirements for games will get lower (since U won't need for example a 3xx$ card to play on high/max settings, but 2xx$ one will be enough).
In other words : U won't be needing a GTX 980 to play in AC:U almost max'ed out, because "GTX 960 Ti" for 200$ will be enough (assuming AC:U can utilise that "50% increase" in DX12 mode).

Ending my explanation : OF COURSE I know it can't be true - LOL !
That's why I said "I will become beliver in PR if it does come true".
I was just being sarcastic...

Hope ^that clarifies My thoughts on this subject.

Ok here we go..

Your point? I never said they didn't say that.. i mean it's the title of the article..
Thought it was obvious they didn't say what hardware? I never said it didn't apply to lower performance cards? They would defeat the purpose of this whole API if it was merely meant for only the fastest of the fastest.

^That's what I meant ie. slower GPU's will get 50% bonus in DX12 compared to DX11.
But... what made U think I meant "My rig" ?

Again.. think this is obvious when the title says it's 50% more performance with this API. What made me think that? Quite simply when you say this

As for DX12 :
If it gives me AC:U/Far Cry 4/Shadow of Mordor at the same level of performance/graphics quality, in up to 50% slower PC, I will become "a beliver" in PR
You are referring to yourself. So the context this sentence is in is basically you saying "if i got same level of performance with my current rig, but with a GPU that in theory is 50% slower, i will believe the PR hype."

"Up to 50%" performance increase is massive !
50% = some mid-end future cards in DX12 mode, can be as fast as today's fastest in DX11.
And when that comes true - real requirements for games will get lower

I agree yes. It is quite a signifcant jump and Mantle needs to be worried(although it doesn't seem like they meant for it to live for long.. just enough to get the industry going). Requirements won't get lower. They will only get higher so devs can get the most potential out of the API. Plus Dx12 will support a smaller low end range of cards(assuming of course) so really it would have a higher low point and the highest point being ever higher.

Ending my explanation : OF COURSE I know it can't be true - LOL !
That's why I said "I will become beliver in PR if it does come true".

That's denial.. of course it can be true. You just aren't seeing the bigger picture. Bad PR applies to companies who consistently fail to live up to promises, aka Ubisoft. MS has a new CEO and so far he's doing a great job. Don't be so negative so quick. At least give them a chance

I like him too :)
OK - I should use "us" instead of "me" there - next time I try to get it right.

As for "I'm in denial" :
I don't see it that way.
I'm just being pragmatic/realistic about these type of things.
If They (or U) show me a independent for example GTX 980 test (a in-game one) - where DX12 results are 50% higher than DX11 mode ones - I will think about beliving in what They say about DX12.

I do not care who's "top boss" since He runs a Company, and that means He must sell what They are selling - just like the guy before him on that position.

To end : This type of "PR stunt" is just a bunch of half-true, bending truth, or not telling the whole truth words and slides, which are meant to sell "The Product".
^I know it's harsh, but that's how I see things. U do not have to agree with me.

If that's "denial" in Your book... then I'm "guilty as charged" ;)

Cheers.

This 50% performance increase looks good on paper, but we don't really know what it will equate to in real world performance until we have 1. Games that fully utilize the API and 2. We are able to test DX12 games on our systems.

In conclusion, take everything with a grain of salt and hope the hype is real.
