Dielectric grease just saved my life!

OK, well PC.

In my haste to get my rig up and running I skipped a few checks on the loop - y'know, 'I know what I'm doing' attitude - WELL DON'T. EVER!

I took my pelt off my rig and cleaned off as much grease as I could, but as anyone with any dielectric grease experience will tell you, getting rid of it is nigh on impossible.

So I left a thin layer on my mobo - great a dust trap I thought.

Anyway, everything is ready to roll, got my water ready to top up the res as water is pumped through the loop.

I fire her up.

Beep.

Look at screen - f1 to set up, f2 to contine. Fine i think, lets get this water round the loop, don't want my new G0 to fry.

So I'm fiddling with the loop and - whoosh - the air gets thrown out.

Ace, I'm in business.

I look at my rig, cool. Everything...

WTF!

Water is spilling out of the CPU block. For a second I don't know what to do, a kind of frantic wave of inaction hits me.

Power.

Kill the power damn it!

Tissue.

Get some

ing tissue!

Wipe it up num nuts.

As I start absorbing the water and manually tightening the barb that has come lose, I see the water is 'sitting' on the mobo, kinda like water off a ducks back.

I quickly mop everything up and get more tissue.

There is no water left, just dielectic grease.

It seems the grease I left on formed a waterproof barrier.

Needless to say I haven't plucked up the courage to fire up my rig just yet, but I think it's ok.

I'm going to dry it again, go to the cinema and chance it when I get back.

Oh, I got a spanner on those barbs, they are now tight :D

Moral: Don't rush anything ever, never skip your final checks.

I know, I know.

But I've built and re build my loop so many times, never had a leak before, ever, so I just did it.

I was working on it quite late last night, and meant to...

Nothing needs to be said so prompts MrSmith to slap self on forehead and go and watch Laurel and Hardy movies to pick up some top tips and sayings

Hopefully avoiding "another fine mess" :p

I'm back - rockin' the G0 - it is awesome... Just running as many things as possible ATM... Temps across cores 22-33 " stock on water...

Ham - I realise what the grease is for, I just didn't realise such a thin layer would save me :) I'm glad I didn't get the TIM remover on it last night!

Azreil - lol, my G0 is a good en.

Chudley - I slapped myself. Hard.

Timmy - when I was cleaning my loop last night, ready to build it, I tightened the barbs by hand, I made a note of needing to tighten the ones to the apogee and thought, I'm strong, I'm sure thats enough. Talk about ego lol!

Water cooling is safe...

I have a cpu error at start up, so i think a bios update is in order.

Few other bits and bobs to do but then I'll start clocking this sucker...

Here are some pictures of my rig ghetto style in the spare room

If you killed your G0 I don't think we'd hear the end of it :P

and ST's lives would probably be in danger...

gotta love that editing :D I think you need to check your monitor though as I could swear there are a couple of black dots on that screen :p

Glas all is well.

haha nice :P, im starting to get annoyed with waiting, does that place still have any G0? the extra £24 isnt seeming to bad lol

I wouldn't know matey - call them to see...

It would seem that the overclocking gods spared you your rig this time mate. I've had to give a few of my rigs up as sacrifices to the gods in the past :(

On another note, I just rebuilt my rig today and noticed some dried FluidXP around the pump..turns out i over-tightened the jubilee clips and its slowly cut thru the tubing

Lol im tempted to drop the case from my new rig just so i can have it sooner :(... but i know ill spill a drink or drop somthing on it so ill wait lol ><

you heard of a case? :D

Lol - see the linky on my sig? I was supposed to be getting my shiny-li ready for this rig...

I don't have the patience for it so I ordered a new li-li... Selling the old one...

btw 1.51v bios = 3.5ghz... With droop thats approx 1.46v...

This chip 3.6ghz at 1.45v on a p35 mobo... I think I need a new mobo

I nearly did the same with mine mate....on the storm block, was tightening a barb and couldn't understand why ot would never feel tight before the thread slipped and the barb became loose again....luckily I realised the o-ring had fallen off the barb when I'd been fitting the pipe work....

Sooo easy to miss something...especially when lost of components are in the loop.

Fingers crossed for the next 'boot-up'! :wavey:

maybe they werent telling the truth?

Not sure - I was speaking to Rich via email and he promised me one that would go a long way on little voltage. I said cool. He said 3.6 @ 1.45v prime, he'll test more tomorrow and send one out.

It was the end of the day and I had next day delivery.

Got to work the next day to see an email from some other guy saying it had been dispatched. Mailed Rich who said he had pulled that order back as that chip did not reach the speeds we had discussed.

At the end of that day he informed me he had secured me a chip at said speeds and volts, they had switched mobos from p5k to msi platinum.

I have his emails with his word to provide a chip at those speeds. As he pulled my order back it doesn't seem to make sense he would send any out.

???
