Dell starts using AMD processors

Wow thats a suprise.

I was expecting Dell to stay loyal to Intel, especially now that Intel is set to own AMD with its Conroe.

Better late then never doens't apply in this case..

The computer enthusiest community expect's intel to re-steal the performance crown, and THEN dell goes AMD. ironic

Yeah I was surprised at this news myself, although one can't resist questioning their motive for the move. Perhaps Dell are doing Intel a favour in their anti-trust court case, or whether it's purely monetary (due to the Opteron's popularity).

Dell realised , albeit a little late , that if they want their server market share back , they will have to get opterons no matter what. The consumers decided late as well that they want opterons instead of xeons. Hell a quad opteron setup kills a quad memrom setup and that proc isnt even launched yet. So yea , good move by Dell. I am guessing we are going to see more amd procs in their desktop lineup aswell. Especially in their XPS gaming lineup now that they have acquired Alienware.

Hmmmm something doesn't seem right here. Intel is about to sweep the market with conroe yet Dell moves to AMD? Do they know something we don't?

This is not the first manufature to use amd products in prebuilt systems. Compaq used Semprons.

Personally no cut against AMD, This may be a bad move for dell cuz they are known for thier Intel Inside products. Most people will see the AMD and say wtf and just keep going.

I asked a few people that work at walmart about the sales of the 2 most expensive systems they had which was a 4000+ ( I belive it was a DC setup ) and a intel 9** system, and they all told me that people had questions about the dc system, but instead went with the intel system that was 200+ more anyways.

I wouldnt spend that kind of cash on a prebuilt system anyways, if i wanted DC it would be for ocing which is NOT what you get with a prebuilt

my 2 cents worth

Well people go for Dell because they're cheap really - and Dell's marketing department is very clever too.

Plus This move has more to do with server/corporate sales than desktop sales which account for a very small part of Dell's sales.

Also the 955 is a dual core HT system so it IS dual core.

Plenty of people want pre-built as you don't have the hessle that goes with a self built system

I knew it wouldnt be long until this happened after they started selling AMD retail process at dell.com.

I have a feeling this has something to do with the Alienware takeover. Dell must have thought that if they are getting AMD's for Alienware, they may as well use them too.

not necessarily in line with might as well but alienware ppl prolly knocked some sense into them and were like " hey look , right now u look like a buncha retards selling a one legged mare. Time to change if u wanna make money. If you are scared of getting ridiculed , start with server then move to desktop. " And then Michael Dell goes , hmmmm could this be the lifejacket that i needed ???

i think dell will regret this when they reazlise that amd are on the whole more prone to go wrong than intel.

dell customer goes and decides to get a nice memory upgrade to his amd rig, oops corsair doesnt work with his shiny new cpu, but does he know that? nope.

another issue will be motehrboards, intel mobos are not overclockable, and damn right boring, but rock solid no doubt. I wonder which mobos dell will use in their amd rigs, because whatever they use, someone somewhere will have problems.
