Dedicated Physx Card

Hey Guys, Deadloss here....

OK, so I'm running a system with a GTX590 over tri-monitors (Nvidia Surround Vision). Games play great and able to get decent FPS over the three monitor, of course games would play better on the one monitor, and yes I would get better FPS and performance, however I've been using surround vision for a while, and its hard to go back to a single monitor.

With that said here's my question:....?

What performance difference would I get from adding a graphics card just for dedicated Physx?
I know some games don't even use it, however with new titles such as Borderlands 2 and FarCry3, these games support Physx.

I've kept up-to-date with my graphics cards, as I'm a massive gamer and do allot of gaming reviews (tutorials more than graphic comparisons).

So into the cupboard I go, and I have a GTX480 sitting there in it's box. Would adding such a high end graphics card as a dedicated Physx card really making any difference?

Would like to hear you thoughts, and / or any result you may have had using a card, as a dedicated physx card.

Not enough of a boost to make it worth buying a card.

But tbh even a GTX650 would be overkill just for physx

Thanks for your reply Tom,

Would you or anyone say that if using a new 6 Series card for example ''GTX650'' adding a graphics card with this for dedicated Physx wouldn't really give you any great (or significant) performance increase?

So let's say I went and treated myself to a GTX650, that would leave me with a GTX590 laying around, again would it be worth then adding that as a dedicated physx card?

In my mind I'm going to say no, but this isn't really my expertese and would just like some guidence and glarification.

Cheers :oc3d: Community,

Hi Tom, sorry for any confusion.

If I went out and bought a new 6 series card, for example the GTX650, I would use this as my primary card (wouldn't I)?. That would then leave me with my GTX590 (I only have one) spar, since I've replace it with the newer card.

So would it be worth adding this card (GTX590) as a dedicated Physx card with my newly bought card ( GTX650)?

Or wouldn't there be any performance gain noticeable?

Cheers,

Deadloss.

Nah mate the idea of a PhysX card it to have your GTX590 doing all of the graphics work (As your main card) and then having a little 650 doing all the PhysX work...
Complete waste of time in my opinion if you've got a decent CPU ~

As above. If you had the 650 as physx only whats doing the actual game work.

So yeah you ADD the 650 as a secondary card dude and have the 590 for games.

TBH I think you should just leave it alone.

Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.

So I'm going to make a call and say, I would be better off using SLi (Buying two of the same cards), than using a dedicated Physx Card?

Again thanks for your help and advice.

BY FAR.
Maybe a PhysX card might net you 1/2 extra frames here and there, but SLI will effectively double your framerate ~ Just make sure your PSU can handle those 2 monsters ;)

I remember a test conducted by Linus over at NCIX, he tested a GTX 580 with a 8800GT, it bottlenecked the 580 by a large margin, he then paired a 560Ti with it, and was getting pretty much on par performance with what the 580 could already output by it's self...

PhysX is not a thing you should be trying to boost with today's hardware.

The most demanding GPU things are AA and resolution, or Textures and shading depending on Vram and bus width of the GPU.

Yes, I took at look at a few posts and video's. So now i'm trying to decide whether to get a pair of GTX650's or if a GTX690 would be better.

However now we're in 2013, whether its worth waiting for newer cards to be released (no idea when) but the GTX7 series possibly. ;)

A pair of 650's is a significant downgrade performance wise from a 590.

The only real upgrade from 480 SLi
580 SLi and the 590, is 670 SLi or a 690...

If you have the cash, sure go ahead and get the 690, but my mind would be set on 670 SLi if you are staying with Nvidia.

Cheers for your help and advice mate, much appreciated.

I'm more incline to swing towards the 690, and future proof my gaming computer for a couple of years.

That's cool, it is a beautiful card, with some amazing engineering, and great design..
Glad to have helped you with a good choice :)
