Decrpyt HP Drive Encryption

Hi All,

I have a HP Laptop ProBook 4310s and the MOBO is dead. I need to copy out the files in the HDD. The problem is the HDD is encrypted by HP Drive Encryption.
Before the decryption, I need to clone the HDD and have tried but no success with Acronis and Macrium (both free version).
My questions are:
1. which software is able to clone an encrypted HDD
2. how to decrypt HP drive encryption
Thanks in advance for all helps.

HP has a tool to decrypt the drive, but only if you backed up the recovery key. Without that you are basically screwed. If the encryption could be easily broken it would defeat the purpose of having it.

As for cloning the drive, you could give clonezilla a shot. You will need to do a sector by sector clone. If the programs you tried support that give it a shot.

+1 Sad to say but like hmmblah said :(. I have a ancient Toshiba tough-top laptop which has something similar and the only way to get around it is to acquire a data (usb) key which will give you access to the drive and the only way to get the key is to know one of Toshs' engineers or ship the laptop with proof of purchase.

Thanks for the replies.
sorry to said that i dont have the recovery key (if you refer the recovery key is something like USB), but i have the password to login when the laptop is boot up. is that consider a recovery key?

When you boot it up and input the password it gives you access to the drive, but without the ability to actually boot the laptop because the mobo is dead the password is useless. Have you contacted HP? They might be able to sort you out with the tools you need, might be a small program but you'll need to put the HDD in another system to access it.

i have contacted HP and seem that they are unable to help much. They answered like it is our (customer's) responsibilities to save guard own data.
BTW, clonezilla is using LINUX based?
