Decision decisions.. New video editing rig

This build will be almost solely for video rendering and editing, with some gaming on the side. (Adobe Master collection, Sony Vegas)

I've been trying to plan this for over a week now but my opinion keeps swaying so it's time to ask for an outside opinion.

Proposed AMD build (Waiting for Bulldozer)

Total build cost: €1,320.12 (inc delivery Free!)

Asus Crosshair V Formula AM3+ AMD 990FX SB950 DDR3 ATX RoG Series €194.67

Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon 6990 HD 4GB PCI-Express 2.1 x16 DVI 4 x MDP €624.03

OCZ Technology 120GB Vertex 3 Series SATA III 2.5" Solid State Drive €230.44

2 x Corsair Memory 8GB (2 x 4GB) Vengeance DDR3 1866MHz DIMM 240-pin CL9 Red €194.66

Noctua Dual Radiator and Fan CPU Cooler Multi-Socket €76.32

Proposed Intel build:

Total build cost: €1,823.22 (inc delivery Free!)

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz LGA1155 8MB €279.53

Asus MAXIMUS IV EXTREME REV 3.0 LGA1155 Intel P67 DDR3 Extended ATX €304.82

Corsair Memory 12GB (3 x 4GB) Dominator GT 2000MHz DDR3 DIMM 240-pin CL9 with Airflow Fan €240.45

Corsair 120GB Force GT SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" Solid State Drive (Read 555MB/s, Write 515MB/s) €228.82

Asus GeForce GTX 590 612MHz 3GB GDDR5 PCI-Express 2.0 DVI miniDP €693.28

Noctua Dual Radiator and Fan CPU Cooler Multi-Socket €76.32

I've already got a case and 500gb HDD I will reuse. I have a non modular 750w alienware psu which I will probably have to replace, and if I do I will replace it with a Corsair 850 Watt Pro Series Gold AX850 €161.09

I will not be purchasing through dabs.ie I've just used it because it displays the products nicely and has a relatively accurate price.

The two different ram choices are also something I need to decide, 16gb or 12gb of faster ram? I can't really see myself using 16gbs of ram

There isn't a strict budget on this. But I would like to keep it as low as possible while still having very good performance. Just as a guide my budget is 2,000 euro. (1,746 British pounds, 2,867 U.S. dollars)

If there is any more information needed please tell me, and thank you in advance for helping :>.

~~ also: Are there any releases except for BD just around the corner that I should wait for? I'm not in too much of a rush to get this so a couple month wait wouldn't hurt, but, I can't keep waiting because new hardware will always be coming out.

2600K would do fine for now

Bulldozer-well the decent ones come next year

Sandy Bridge E-the ideal choice,, but again coming next year (or the value for money chips anyway)

Ivy Bridge-not particularly worth waiting for in terms of its probably going to be 4cores/8threads again, maybe a 6core in there.

I think im going to go for a 2600k, and instead of reusing a case I'll just go for a whole new build.

tal build cost: €2,022.72 + €30 shipping

XFX RADEON HD 6990 830M 4GB DDR5 FOUR MINIDP DVI €571.05

Corsair Force Series GT 120GB SSD 6,4cm (2,5") SATA III €216.17

ASUS DRW-22B3L PATA Bulk schwarz €26.24 (only use will be installing windows.)

Corsair Professional Series Gold AX850, 850 Watt €153.46

WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA 3 8,9cm(3,5") €66.04

Noctua NH-D14, Sockel AM2/AM2+/AM3/775/1366/1156 €67.99

12GB-Kit Corsair Vengeance PC3-16000U CL10 €138.71

Corsair Obsidian Serie 800D, ATX, ohne Netzteil €235.61

Tad over budget but I can always just sell my current rig since it will still be in once piece.

Thoughts on my choices? That case looks massive so hopefully I won't have any trouble with my chubby fingers.

For the motherboard, you don't have to spend that much unless you really have a fancy for the board, the differences between mid range and high end aren't so great on Sandy Bridge, plus you don't have SLi/Xfire, so no need for Dual x16 lanes. So you could cut some cost there.

That SSD is good, also check out the Crucial M4 128GB if its cheaper, because there is little performance degradation on it.

For the DVD drive, why not just get an external, USB powered one? I do, really handy for the netbook and such
smile.gif

If that drive is for storage, get the WD Caviar Green 1TB, 110MB read and write (for me anyway), and its silent
smile.gif
And cheaper perhaps

Everything else looks great mate

I would like to be able to crossfire over the next 12 months, and for some reason I'm attracted to that board
tongue.gif
To be honest the 20 euro difference between the green and black drive is worth the increased speed, same with the SSD.

I'll sleep on the price and see if I actually don't mind about the performance difference
tongue.gif
.

Thanks for your help
biggrin.gif

Its np

But if you planned to Xfire, then deffo don't get two 6990s
smile.gif
The AX850 won't handle it well
sad.gif
And the heat/performance/cost increase is not worth it
smile.gif

Also on the SSD, that big number of 600MBps is not what you're going to get in 99% of applications, in fact no where near really
smile.gif
But in reality its probably better than the m4
smile.gif

I think 110MBps read/write isn't too shabby, but its up to you what kind of performance you need
smile.gif
Otherwise you could RAID0 two of them, as failure rates are low
smile.gif
But backup anyway hehe

I'll worry about crossfire when I need it, I'll just try get the best setup for my money now
biggrin.gif
. I want to just remove the chance of bottlenecks as much as I can, money left over is just going to sit idle so I might as well spend it. Oh the joys of being 16
biggrin.gif
. I need to figure out how much I can sell my current system for, hopefully enough to get a second graphics card right away.

Ah but that's my point, if you get a second, then in some situations, gaming anyway, it could very well become the situation that a 2nd GPU is a bottleneck. I remember when I was 16
smile.gif
So do a few girls
biggrin.gif

Im building this computer to get girls. AM I DOIN IT RITE??

To be honest 1 6990 will be more than enough for my gaming needs, only need to play counterstrike source in 800x600 resolution

Might be worth getting a new monitor then...the 6990 is going to blow up, wouldn't be surprised to see framerates run into the thousands at that resolution
biggrin.gif

Can't see myself buying another monitor for a little while... This 22" apple cinema (The old one, sadly) is still fine for what I need.

If I were to buy a new monitor I would probably get a 125hz CRT anyways
tongue.gif

I'll try get a hl2 stress test of 1337 fps!

suprized no one else has caught it yet but SB is dual channel not triple channel so you'll want 2,4,8 gb no 12 lol or you'll hve an extra stick layin about lol but all else looks great

1337th post sin by the way.

I don't quite understand dual channel and triple channel restrictions, could I go for 16gb? I'm not sure if I really need more than 8gb though. Should I just go for 8gb of quite good ram?

If you get Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge, you need 1,2,4 sticks of RAM. 2 is the sweet spot, i.e. 2x4GB, but you can get 4x4GB if you feel its going to help with editing, especially with large movies.

So if you do that, get some Mushkin Redline Ridgebacks, or some very high frequency RAM, with the lowest timings then
smile.gif

If you get Sandy Bridge E, thats quad channel, so that's 4 x2GB/4GB to use that properly, so 16GB will probably become the norm if they are pushing that way
smile.gif

I'm not sure about Bulldozer, the Enhanced chips and Fm2 motherboard are all next year
sad.gif

Total: €101.98

2 x 8GB-Kit G-Skill Ripjaws PC3-10667U CL7 €50.99

Look good? I honestly don't think I will notice the difference between CL7 1333, CL9 1866 or whatever else I can choose from. This one meets my colour scheme and seems to fit under a D-14 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkA6rf_6CE8)

Going to go ahead with ordering this very soon. This computer was completely fine until I got the idea into my head that I could improve it. Now it's the slowest thing I've ever experienced
rolleyes.gif

No, 1600MHz should be the minimum you go for, after that there is a smaller difference, but its up to you. I'd recommend Mushkin RAM though
