Dead CPU?

I had a problem recently with hard drives apparently dying which was probably down to the power supply, so I've replaced that. All good at first but then the PC would totally freeze, worse and worse each time, now it doesn't even beep when turned on although all fans are spinning and the green power LED is on on the mobo. I've tried the old PSU, no change.

I'm wondering if at some point the cables have stopped the CPU fan and that's got fried, although I've no reason to suspect that in particular...

Does sound like the CPU has gone.. but I cannot be sure.. :eh:

Try other components first.. like ram and stuff.

Reset the bios to defaults too..

More likely too the the motherboard than the CPU tbh. See if you can pick up some cheap-o spares (sempron + pc chips type stuff) just too test with.

I've reset the BIOS and reseated the RAM, going to try running MEMTEST but I suspect it won't be able to. There's 2 x 1GB sticks so I'll try it with just one of each.

same thing happened to me, it was the motherboard, not the cpu! Try and pick up a cheap motherboard, or use a mates computer to test your cpu.

Due to a shortage of socket 939 chips and boards, their relative expense and my lack of patience I've ordered a new CPU and a new mobo:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ 'Brisbane 65nm' (Socket AM2) - Retail with Fan

Gigabyte M55-S S3 nForce 550 (Socket AM2) PCI-E Motherboard

Let's hope these don't mysteriously die - this machine seems cursed.

Sorry matey!

You will need to buy some DDR2 for your new setup.

AM2 = DDR2

939 = DDR

But it is a welcome performance boost! ;)

I'm hopeless when it comes to memory - my own and PC's!

OCZ 2Gb DDR2 PC2-8000 Titanium Alpha VX2 4-4-4-15 Dual Channel Kit do the trick?
