CPU & GPU

Hi All

Just got my 5870 folding and its rattling its way through a 5733 showing 3710 PPD.

Now the CPU has slowed to a crawl, thats munching on a P6051. Currently thats only showing 400PPD where im sure it should be a lot more.

Checking the resource settings the CPU is using 25% on Core 11 and 75% on core a3.

im sure i just need to configure differently as when the nvidia was folding it didnt affect the CPU folding.

Is this due to the ATI not having CUDA and relying more on the CPU to help with the folding??

In which case whats the best scenario? Stop the GPU keep CPU or Keep CPU stop GPU.

Both does not seem to be effective.

The GPU fold will be using the CPU aswell, normally about 25% soooooo your scores when you take that in to account sound about right.

What does the CPU get in regards to PPD ?

and what does the GPU pull out ?

The i5 750 at 4200Mhz could put out 12000PPD +- the Ati will not get that kind of PPD...

LOL so i just answered my own question....

IIRC the ATI cards take an entire core to run, so if your on a quad core cpu you will lose and entire core to the GPU. So if the loss of a core to the GPU is a bigger PPD loss than the PPD of the GPU, you are better off just running the CPU and with less heat.

I wonder why once I switch on my GPUs why my CPU just dies or the opposite. Also why is my CPU showing 15k ppd when it takes it two days to complete something that's worth roughly 9k points?

@ Todd is that down to the -bigadv ? I would not know as I can't run it

weeps.... and also is your machine on 24hrs? I usually click on the letters SMP or GPU# on the left hand side of GPU tracker to find out how long a unit has left to run, its been pretty accurate so far.

IIRC the gputracker doesn't show you the benefits from the passkey-bonus, so

you don't see how many points you gain with a WU. FahMon will tell you, that

your 9k-WU is worth about 65-70k when you upload it within four days after

downloading.

On the other hand FahMon doesn't tell you how many PPD you gain with your

GPU ( at least it's not working with my installed FahMon... )

Xochielt are you on about -bigadv, I upload all my A3s within a day of downloading and never get ahywhere close to the points you are stating, take a peek to see what I mean.

I do use -bigadv, yes. The problem is sometimes even when I only let my CPU run it's nowhere near completing it on schedule.

Huh? What am I doing wrong then? I am using the multi-core SMP client with all CPU cores, bigadv enabled on a 950 at 3.6 and my two 768 460s on GPU3.

Not much,

as

Must be something wrong there. My Phenom 2 x4 usually finishes 1-2 bigadv projects a day.

There is no way you can finish a BIGadv into one day not even on a I7 860 at 4500Mhz

i think foods means a normal WU or something , or else i am completely lost here

you need to get a priority switcher to keep the cpu client higher than the gpu client that way they wont starve each other.

i had lots of trouble sorting it out when i started to run both at once a while back.

edit

it amd cards need a whole core you might want an affinty app to sort that out aswell.
