Cpu Gone BYE BYE?

Hi all,

I deceided to use my spare parts to build a comp for my daughter, I had it all rigged up and nothing happened. No signal sent to the monitor which I have checked.

I checked the power supply and that was getting power to the motherboard as the green power lights were on.

So i have just checked the cpu (P4 3.4) and about 4 of the main blocks are a darker colour with what looks like a greenish powder.

This chip was cooled by my Mach11 so am not sure if its just a by product of that ie oxidation?

I tried taking a photo but it turned out rubbish.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Have a word with Thicky, he's been here far tooo many time in a row and spent a lot of hard earnt wonga on it all

If it is showing signs of oxidation then it is highly possible that the CPU has shorted and therefore died. It would suggest that the chip has been exposed to condensation whilst under the mach.

Another reason that it may have died is due to it being run at subzero temperatures for a length of time and then run at normal air temperatures, (which for Pentium 4 cpus can be in the 60s) this rapid and extreme change in temperature may have caused damage to the chip. There is no hard evidence for this theory and it seems unlikely with the oxidation damge.

green powder = copper oxide.

Make of that what you will.

whether that killed it though?

I have never lost any p4's to condensation or anything else, and would be very surprised if you had.Are you sure it isn't anything else ?,cpu would be absolutely my last suspect. If you want someone to test the cpu for you,i'd help you out.

I'd ment in the fact of having so many MAX3's die and this darker colour with what looks like a greenish powder thats spoken of is kidna what you had!!!

Idea with the green powder theroy...did ya use the grease stuff in the pins? There coper right?

So is the comp powering up then sorry i didnt quite understand what u ment? If so then if there is no signal to the monitor could it be the gpu possibly? presuming ure using a gpu card that is. if not maybe the onboard graphics are pooped? as for the cpu i have no idea as i dont use phase so therefore dont get green pins8) Just a few thoughts

Condensation is more likely to kill the board beforoe the CPU.

having said that, it cements the need to use dilectric grease or similar in the CPU socket to prevent such occurences over long term exposure to sub zero temps.

Get urself some TIM cleaner and a soft toothbrush to clean the oxidised product away and retry the cpu in a different board.

Good luck

Thanks for all your help guys.

Thickbrit, Do I just post the cpu to you? I think knowing for sure if its the Cpu or not is the easiest route to take.
