A friend of mine would like to know if this ram is any good. Seems really cheap at $225 AUS for a 12GB Kit (3x4GB), 1600mhz 9-9-9-24. Also becuase of my recomandation to the nh-d14 would this b able to fit if the fan was to be lifted or maybe turned the othe way around, since he has a antec 902 case with the bigboy fan on top?

Thanks in advance

milo

Yeah is good ram (having lots of good experience with corsair ram)...

Its the most common these days i guess in terms of speed so... good stuff.

If you want to fit it with a Noctua nh-d14 you indeed have to lift the first fan,

but perhaps you could also fit the first fan on the other side of the cooler...

thanks for your help buddy, it seems as though he doesnt need this much ram, i am trying to convince him to go 3x2g sticks wich are faster, but he thinks that 12g are better then 6g

Anyway thanks very much for your help

Tell him to run a game and see what the RAM usage is

Also according to Tom Vengeance doesn't overclock that well.

right now he exceeds 4gb thats why he wants more ram. He is a software engineer so he does do some heavy dudy things but 6gb should be enough i think but he wants an opinion on the vengance ram which i have never heard of or know anything about

Tom recently released a video on it, and he says they are extremely good value kits, if the only real issue with them being the tall heatsinks. They also seemed to overclock fairly well. No idea why I thought he said they didn't overclock well.

So if your friend is going to get a 4GB stick, the Vengeance RAM is a good option, but just becarefulo of the tall heatsinks. Mushkin also have some 4GB sticks with the Ridgeback heatsinks so those won't have any heatsink clearance issues, might get your friend to look into those.

wow i cant belive i missed that vid, i'm really sorry about that, i honestly mist that vid posted 1 day ago.

But anyway 2 quick questions for you

1) my friend has tha antec 902 would he be able to flip the noctua sidways so that the exuast is coming out of the bigboy fan on top.

2) since price is quite similar if you dont need 12g would you still recomend getting them becuase the other good 6gb ram is similar in price

Again sorry about looking like a twit

Flipping the Noctua sideways has an adverse effect on cooling since it limits the amount of air they can intake since there is a graphics card in the way. It also forces the heatsink to intake more hot air from the graphics card and less of the cooler air sweeping from the front.

Also there is nothing really wrong with having more RAM than you need, he could just take off the heatsinks on the RAM and than bolt on the Noctua,

Heatsinks, while they do help with cooling the RAM isn't essential, they tend to be more aesthetics than an actual need. On Hardware Canucks they test RAM temperatures with the heatsinks on and off. The ones with heatsinks tend to be around 5-10*C cooler, but I personally don't think it's an issue. You can always just snap the top of the heatsinks off.

oh, i think he wants something for the looks, anything just so it's not green lol, but it may be an option to to see how the heatsing is fitted and iff maybe you can unskrew the top part of it or soething i donno

Just remove the corsair sinks and buy some aftermarket ones. You do still need something on there 'snapping' them off will look crap.

yeah your right, is putting on a new heatsink easy? not shure never done it

oh and i just spoke with him on the phone, he has decided to buy them ram, he wants the Zalman CNPS9900MAX but i just told him to wait to see if we can get some after market heatsinks

That's an odd choice in cooler, sure it looks cool, but I don't think it can handle that much of an overclock with the i7s

no i know it cant but it fits thats why he has chosin it, he only have a noraml oc of 3.6 that a friend did for him before even his stock wasnt to hot but if your gonna spend $80 aus when a noctua is $100 aud then its a no brainer

well here we go,

i told him that and we had a long discussion and this is what we decided.

the G.Skill Ripjaws 12gb (3x4) 9-9-9-24 1.5v was the way to go, with the noctua nh-d14.

thank you all for your help i how i haven't wasted your time with my indecision
