Copying a hard disk with multiple users

Been asked to copy all the files from a mates hard disk because his mobo died. Theres 5 users set up to use the computer, and each has a "My Documents" folder. I cant access or copy any of them.

I tried booting off the HDD but it wont load (which I expected)

Is there any way around this, or will I have to admit failure? They're marked as "read only" but clearing that option makes no difference.

Finally had a chance to try that today- provisionally it worked fine, but the proof will come when the original disk owner gets it back and can view all their files...
