Coolung Options for New Build

So I was going to be getting a 2700k z68 setup & throwing it inside a Fractal r3 case and cooling it with a Corsair H80.

However I've now decided to take the 3930k x79 route as lga2011 is more than likely going to provide an upgrade path to Ivybridge-E so this to me makes the most sense for futureproofing.

So I decided the H80 isn't really going to be sufficient to cool an overclocked 3930k and thought the h100 would be a better option but after doing some research it would appear there isn't enough room to mount the rad & fans inside the r3 and the fans would have to be mounted externally on the case roof. Not a very eloquent solution.

So what do I do guys, pick another case which will accommodate the h100 or go with a suitable aircooling system which is compatible with the Fractal r3?

Ideas, suggestions, opinions please...

first things first

the 2700k is socket 1155 the 3930k is socket 2011. Ivy Bridge will be socket 1155 as well so thinking the 3930k will have an upgrade path to IB is in error. If you want IB then go for your 2700k and Z68 make it a Gen 3 board and wallah pop in a IB when release simples. Or wait til the Z77 boards come out.

ok now secondly Ivy Bridge will be on a smaller die so in theory should produce less heat. So if you must waste ur money on an H/??? then either will work I hear the H100 is the best but only after changing the fans to quieter ones. IMHO I'd get a D-14 and be done unless you want to do a proper loop for water cooling.

just fyi mate no tryin to bash ur plans.

Yeah, seems like a good plan. Tbh im sure you be more then happy with the 3930k, but its nice to know that you can jump to IB-E when it is launched. You could also follow SIN's advice and get a 2600k/2700k and gen 3 z68 mb.

The D-14, Phantek and Havik are the best aircoolers around. If you want to get a closed watercooling solution, the corsair H100 is pretty good. If your thinking about watercooling you should get a custom set or a good wc kit. If you dont wanna spend to mutch money on wc, then the XSPC wc kits are pretty good.

Im not sure what kinda rads that will fit inside the R3 case, but i guess you could get another case that is made for the H100 or bigger wc set up.

Thanks do you know of any reputable cases that accommodate the h100 for sure?

I was super-impressed with the r3's understated looks & sound proofing.

I'm not looking for anything flashy with see through side panels, it any of that jazz & don't want to spend an absolute fortune on a case.

Is air cooling suitable for a chip such as an overclocked 3930k? (by overclocked I mean a sensible little 24/7 oc)

Is the H80 definitely insufficient for an oc'd 3930k if ambient temps were low & case airflow was excellent?

I'll also look at the XSPC wc kits you mentioned, haven't done a wc build before so this stuff is new to me hence me preferring air/closed loop if possible.

That's great thanks the ARC looks ok too, I've also just noticed there's a Fractal Define XL which seems to be a bigger version of the R3 presumably this would also have room to accommodate the h100 or full size radiator in the roof.

If anyone can confirm this that'd be great...

No it won't - there are no fan grills in the top, just a 180 that vents out of the top back.

Ok cool thanks again, I was just watching a video review there and thought that might be the case 'no pun intended'

That seems like a bit of an oversight to me, to go and create a bigger version of their fancy case and not provide anywhere to mount a radiator after going to the trouble of putting in holes for water pipes in the back especially seeing as the feature was there on the smaller model.

Leaves me a little confused as to who or what the XL is for *shrugs* (air cooled sandybridge & SLI / Crossfire perhaps)

Well so far the ARC & the h100 seems like the best option for me.

I'm sure the front of the ARC would accomodate a 240 rad with a bit of modding as well. And yeah you would have thought they could have put similar mounting holes in the XL. All the reviews that I've read also question how effective the top fan is at removing the hot air - as its at quite an acute angle to the exhaust.

not to bash your knowlage. please correct me if im being a dult.... ib was released a while ago on z68 and z77 chipset motherboards. and while ofering a bit more power also outputs a great deal more heat than sb hence people are able to overclock them less. im sure what the op was suggesting was that he should get a x79 platform witch currently run on sandybridge-e cpu's as there is a great possibility intel have struck the am2+ style upgrade routes wheere a new cpu (ivy bridge-e) will be released and compotible with x79 lga 2011 motherboards. witch imo is a great choice but kind of relly's upon the next generation of cpu's released for the board not to flop and be awfull. rAnt over. i bet im just making aloada schoolboy errors in this one... ;-)
edit o_O. just looked at the date and now feal a bit specail. some of it remains relevant though....
